Summary

Quality Assurance Testing (QAT) Analyst – Robotic Process Automation (RPA)
Join HMRC’s Digital Transformation in a Key Testing Role

About the Role

Are you passionate about delivering robust, reliable digital solutions? Do you thrive in an environment where innovation, collaboration, and attention to detail are valued?

HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Office (CDIO) is seeking a Quality Assurance Testing (QAT) Analyst to join our Robotic Process Automation (RPA) team. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of digital automation at scale, ensuring our robotic processes deliver real value to over 76,000 colleagues across HMRC.

Your Impact

As a QAT Analyst, you’ll be instrumental in validating and assuring automated RPA solutions.

You’ll work closely with developers, product owners, architects, and business experts to ensure our NICE-based robotic processes meet business requirements and perform dependably in live environments.

Your role is vital in making sure every automation service is robust, reliable, and aligned with user and organisational needs.

What You'll Do

• Lead on test strategy and planning for RPA solutions, focusing on manual testing and business assurance.
• Design, develop, and execute comprehensive test artefacts: test plans, end-to-end scenarios, test data, and reports.
• Review and analyse user stories and requirements, identifying and addressing gaps or ambiguities to guarantee clarity.
• Set up and manage test environments on virtual machines, ensuring readiness for execution.
• Perform hands-on manual testing of RPA solutions, observing process flows and validating actual versus expected outcomes.
• Identify, log, and track defects, performing regression testing to confirm fixes are effective and stable.
• Collate and present test evidence, supporting sign-off from product owners and stakeholders.
• Manage Business Assurance Testing (BAT) and Control Go Live (CGL) phases, building stakeholder confidence for go-live decisions.
• Champion best practice in quality assurance, mentoring colleagues and supporting a culture of continuous improvement.
• Promote RPA capabilities across the Chief Product and Digital Office (CDPO) and wider HMRC.

What We’re Looking For

We need someone who can confidently straddle technical and non-technical domains, bringing clarity, rigour, and a commitment to high standards. You’ll demonstrate:

• Testing Delivery & Methodology: Proven manual software testing experience, with strong understanding of Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid methodologies.
• Requirements & Defect Analysis: Ability to break down business requirements into actionable test scenarios, identify and manage defects systematically.
• Quality Assurance & Accuracy: Meticulous attention to detail, ensuring robust test coverage and reliable outcomes.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, building strong working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
• Work Planning & Adaptability: Skilled in using Microsoft Teams, Planner, or similar tools to manage workload independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
• RPA Technology Experience: Hands-on experience with Robotic Process Automation tools (e.g. NICE, Blue Prism, UiPath, Automation Anywhere).
• Data & Query Languages: Familiarity with structured data formats and query languages, such as JSON, XML, and SQL.

Desirable:

• ISTQB Foundation in Software Testing or equivalent certification.
• Knowledge of HMRC systems, data structures, and operational processes.

Behaviours for Success

You’ll be assessed on the following key behaviours during the selection process:
• Managing a Quality Service
• Working Together
• Delivering at Pace

Location & Additional Information

We have several locations available, including transitional sites such as Benton Park View, Newcastle (moving to Pilgrims Quarter) and Telford Plaza, Telford (moving to Parkside Court). If you’re based in Leeds, a Moves Adjustment Payment may be available for current HMRC colleagues in Bradford who meet eligibility criteria.

Please note: Security Check (SC) clearance is required for this role, either already held or willingness to obtain.

Why Join Us?
At HMRC, you’ll be part of a supportive, forward-thinking community committed to making a real difference. You’ll have opportunities to lead, influence, and grow your skills while contributing to innovative digital solutions that impact millions. If you’re ready to help shape the future of automation in the public sector, we’d love to hear from you.
