Role Overview The Lead Practice Nurse is a senior clinical leader within the GP practice, responsible for overseeing the nursing team and ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based care. This role combines hands-on clinical work with team leadership, service development, and strategic input into practice operations. Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties Deliver high-quality nursing care including: Chronic disease management (Inc Diabetes Management and insulin initiation) Cervical cytology and womens health clinics Childhood and adult immunisations Travel health advice and vaccinations Wound care Contraceptive services (e.g. pill checks, injections) Coordinate administration of under Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and within scope of practice Provide health promotion and lifestyle advice (e.g. smoking cessation, weight management) Support patients in managing long-term conditions and medication adherence Maintain accurate and timely clinical records using appropriate coding Team Leadership & Management Line manage practice nurses, HCAs, and phlebotomists Conduct appraisals and assist with planning leave Lead recruitment, induction, and training of new nursing staff Organise and lead regular nursing team meetings Delegate clinical responsibilities safely and appropriately Support staff with mandatory training and CPD requirements Governance & Quality Assurance Act as Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Lead: Conduct audits, deliver training, ensure compliance Lead on clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives Ensure compliance with CQC standards and clinical protocols Participate in significant event reviews and disseminate learning Maintain and monitor cold chain and vaccine storage protocols Strategic & Collaborative Working Work with GPs and Practice Manager to develop services and clinics Contribute to Enhanced Services and QOF achievement Liaise with external agencies (e.g. safeguarding, district nursing, social care) Represent the nursing team in multidisciplinary meetings Respond to national policy changes and implement best practice
