Job Purpose
To support the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the scaffolding yard by handling, inspecting, storing, loading, and unloading scaffolding materials and equipment, while maintaining high standards of housekeeping, safety, and organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Yard Operations
• Receive, inspect, sort, and store scaffolding materials including tubes, fittings, boards,
stillages, and accessories
• Prepare materials for delivery to site and safely receive return loads
• Stack and store materials in designated areas to maintain stability and prevent damage
• Maintain clear access routes and safe pedestrian and vehicle segregation
Loading & Unloading
• Assist with the loading and unloading of vehicles using mechanical handling equipment where provided
• Carry out manual handling tasks safely and in accordance with training
• Secure loads using appropriate banding, pallets, stillages, or restraints
• Follow instructions from banksmen, supervisors, and plant operators at all times
• Never stand beneath suspended loads or enter exclusion zones
Forklift & Plant Support
• Operate forklifts or other plant only if trained, authorised, and certificated
• Support forklift and HIAB operations as a banksman where trained
• Carry out basic daily checks where required and report defects immediately
• Never use plant or equipment without authorisation
Inspection & Stock Control
• Inspect scaffolding materials for damage, wear, or defects in line with company procedures
• Segregate damaged or unserviceable equipment into designated areas
• Assist in stock control and organisation to ensure only fit-for-use materials are issued
• Report recurring defects or unsafe materials to the Yard Manager
Health, Safety & Compliance
• Follow the Yard Induction & Safe Working Procedure at all times
• Wear mandatory PPE including safety helmet, safety footwear, hi-visibility clothing, and
gloves
• Work in accordance with relevant risk assessments and method statements
• Report all accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards, and unsafe conditions immediately
• Exercise stop-work authority where conditions are unsafe
Housekeeping & Environment
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation throughout the yard
• Dispose of waste materials in designated skips and recycling facilities
• Prevent accumulation of waste that could create slip, trip, fire, or environmental hazards
• Support the company’s environmental objectives including reuse and recycling of materials
Training & Behaviour
• Attend inductions, toolbox talks, and refresher training as required
• Only undertake tasks you are trained and competent to perform
• Cooperate with management and colleagues to maintain a safe working environment
• Act as a positive role model for safety, professionalism, and teamwork
Authority
• Authority to stop work if unsafe conditions are identified
• Authority to refuse unsafe instructions and report concerns to management
Skills & Experience (Essential)
• Experience working in a construction or scaffolding yard environment (preferred)
• Good understanding of manual handling principles
• Awareness of health and safety responsibilities
• Ability to follow instructions and safe systems of work
• Good communication and teamwork skills
Skills & Experience (Desirable)
• Forklift Truck (FLT) licence
• Experience with scaffolding materials and equipment
• Banksman or slinger training (Free training available for applicants)
