Health & Safety Training Manager

About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Health & Safety Training Manager to join our team. This hybrid role covering both training in our distribution centre and general H&S across the wider Society, is ideal for someone passionate about teaching, improving workplace safety, and supporting the digital transformation of health and safety & warehouse training records.

Based primarily within our retail distribution centre in Livingston, you will deliver high‑quality forklift training and partner with the Society’s Health & Safety Manager to enhance safety standards across the whole Society. You will play a key role in implementing and championing digital-first record-keeping and reporting, while ensuring our warehouse colleagues benefit from modern, efficient safety and training systems.

Key Responsibilities

Forklift Training & Instruction

  • Deliver in‑house training for Counterbalance and Reach trucks.
  • Provide classroom-based and practical training sessions for warehouse colleagues.
  • Carry out and demonstrate operator before-use and after-use checks.
  • Evaluate trainee performance and provide constructive, clear feedback.
  • Complete all course paperwork neatly and accurately in line with RTITB audit standards.
  • Conduct refresher and re-certification training as required.
  • Maintain accurate training documentation and certification logs, with a focus on transitioning to digital training records.

Digital Transformation of Safety Systems

  • Support the migration from paper‑based processes to digital record‑keeping across Warehouse training and Health & Safety.
  • Ensure training records, audits, inspections, and safety observations are consistently captured within digital platforms.
  • Help colleagues adopt digital safety systems by providing guidance, support, and training where needed.

Health & Safety Advisory Duties

  • Work proactively with warehouse colleagues and the Warehouse Management Team to maintain safe systems of work.
  • Work in partnership with the Society’s Health & Safety Manager to enhance safety standards across the whole Society
  • Support the development and implementation of best practice across Health & Safety.
  • Ensure consistent compliance with Health & Safety legislation and internal policies.
  • Advise on and help set operational safety objectives.
  • Support and conduct investigations into accidents and incidents, ensuring findings are documented digitally.
  • Carry out ABC Tours (Attitude, Behaviour & Culture) and encourage proactive safety observations.
  • Assess working environments to ensure safe conditions for colleagues and contractors.
  • Identify gaps in the Health & Safety management system and recommend improvements.
  • Communicate legislative changes or best practice updates clearly to operational teams.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Existing forklift instructor licence (training may be funded for the right candidate).
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or IOSH equivalent).
  • Membership of a recognised Health & Safety professional body (e.g., IOSH).
  • Strong working knowledge of workplace safety regulations and forklift operation standards.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience training or guiding staff in Health & Safety best practice.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and influence at all levels.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.
  • Confidence using digital tools and systems, with an interest in modernising safety reporting and record‑keeping.
