Environmental Planner
Location: Derby or London. The role can be based in either location with hybrid working
Finlay Jude Associates is working with a leading infrastructure delivery organisation within the UK water sector to recruit an Environmental Planner to join their Enabling team. This role plays a key part in project development, acting as a link between feasibility, design, and construction teams to ensure projects progress smoothly from early scoping through to site start.

Purpose of the Role
The Environmental Planner will provide environmental and planning advice throughout the design and development stages of water and wastewater infrastructure projects. The role focuses on identifying consenting requirements, managing environmental deliverables, and supporting the timely progression of projects in line with programme and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities
• Work closely with designers and project managers to understand project scope and advise on environmental and planning consent requirements
• Assist in identifying EIA and town planning requirements and coordinating the delivery of planning applications
• Provide early-stage advice on consenting processes and anticipated timescales to inform construction programmes
• Deliver environmental project management to ensure environmental studies, surveys, reports, and assessments are completed on time
• Coordinate third-party design reviews, Environmental Risk Reviews, and planning/environmental scopes of work
• Contribute to project cost inputs related to environmental and planning activities
• Liaise with client environmental planners and planning consultants to coordinate documentation for EIA screening and planning submissions
• Support meetings with clients, statutory consultees, and third parties as required
• Coordinate with designers and project managers to agree environmentally compliant design solutions
• Manage GIS support to produce Environmental Constraints Maps where required
• Identify Environmental Permitting (EPR) requirements and coordinate specialist support as needed
• Assist with communications with Local Planning Authorities and statutory consultees
• Engage with environmental regulators as required
• Coordinate the preparation of documentation for environmental consents, including:
• Environment Agency consents
• Flood Risk Activity Permits
• Ordinary Watercourse Consents
• Hedgerow Removal Notices
• Public Rights of Way diversions
• Tree works applications and conservation area notices
• Support the delivery of biodiversity targets in line with client requirements
About the Candidate
Essential:
• Knowledge and experience of environmental management and consenting
• Strong written and verbal communication and negotiation skills
• Good IT capability
• Effective time and workload management skills
• Flexible and proactive approach to work
• Ability to set objectives and plan delivery
• Full UK driving licence
Desirable:
• Relevant CSCS card
• Qualification in environmental planning, town planning, or a related discipline
• Experience providing environmental project management support
