Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine:
This post provides training in all aspects of Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine. The PICU at St Mary’s Hospital is recognised for Year 1 of the two‑year Grid programme in Paediatric Intensive Care.

St Mary’s PICU is a major referral centre for children with life‑threatening medical conditions. The Department of Paediatrics has a strong clinical and research focus on Infectious Diseases. The unit is the Regional Referral Centre for HIV‑infected children and receives referrals for complex infectious diseases, including those requiring intensive care. It is also one of London’s four paediatric Major Trauma Centres and a designated HCID centre for both airborne and contact infections.

St Mary’s PICU works closely with GOSH through the Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS), providing an independent retrieval service for the North Thames region. CATS includes consultants and Fellows from St Mary’s and offers training in retrieval medicine. Children are retrieved to PICUs at St Mary’s, GOSH, the Royal Brompton, and the Royal London. The unit has 15 beds and admits around 500 children per year, with 80% retrieved by CATS.

The PICU has an active research portfolio. Current projects include trials in non‑invasive respiratory support, bronchiolitis care, AI models for ventilation, sepsis endotyping, and point‑of‑care ultrasound. The unit is also a specialist centre for high‑consequence infectious diseases.
