Crynodeb

As Muslim Chaplain, you will provide pastoral and spiritual care to students and staff, with a particular focus on the needs of Muslim members of our community. You will help maintain and develop prayer facilities, support and coordinate Friday Prayers, and work closely with the Islamic Society on activities such as Ramadan events, as well as contribute to other faith-related initiatives. Working collaboratively with Chaplaincy colleagues and wider Student Services teams, you will also contribute to interfaith dialogue, promote mutual understanding, and help foster a culture of belonging, inclusion and wellbeing across campus. This is a meaningful and visible role at the heart of campus life, offering the opportunity to make a genuine difference to students’ experience and sense of connection during their time at university.

What We’re Looking For:
We are keen to hear from candidates who can demonstrate the following:

A practising Muslim, recognised and respected within a local Muslim community.
Experience supporting Muslim individuals or communities, with a broad knowledge of Islamic worship / prayer practices and pastoral needs.
Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with the ability to support individuals from diverse backgrounds sensitively and non-judgementally.
Ability to build relationships and collaborate with students, staff, and external faith communities.
Experience of working within UK Higher Education would be advantageous but is not a requirement.

Professional Development:
We are committed to helping you succeed and grow in this role. The successful candidate will receive:

A comprehensive induction and ongoing training tailored to the role
Regular supervision and opportunities for reflective practice
Access to professional development to build confidence, skills, and experience where needed

We value learning, reflection, and professional growth, and we will support you to thrive as part of our Chaplaincy team.

This role is based on campus at the University of Portsmouth working part time (22.2 hours per week), term time (working 39 weeks per year) ideally, but we may be able to support full year working for the right candidate. We will require you to work a Friday, but we can be flexible on the other 2 days worked.

For salary calculations you will be paid for 43.875 weeks. The difference between 43.875 and the 39 weeks worked each year covers paid annual leave entitlement and public and statutory holidays. The salary is divided into 12 equal monthly instalments.

The interviews are currently anticipated to be held week commencing 09 March 2026.

An Enhanced with Child and Adult Workforce Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required for this post.
