Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is seeking a dedicated and motivated Waste Operations Supervisor to join their Waste Operations team in Carrickfergus. This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of essential frontline services that keep our borough clean, safe and sustainable.If you're an experienced operational leader with a passion for service excellence, team development and continuous improvement, we'd love to hear from you.


About the RoleReporting to the Waste Operations Manager, you will oversee the day‑to‑day delivery of a wide range of waste and cleansing services, including:

  • Refuse and commercial waste collection
  • Kerbside recycling
  • Street cleansing
  • Bulky waste collection
  • Public conveniences
  • Associated cleaning and delivery services


You will play a central role in ensuring services are delivered efficiently, safely and in line with statutory requirements, budgetary constraints and Council performance standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesService Delivery

  • Lead and supervise daily operations across waste collection, recycling, street cleansing and public conveniences.
  • Plan workloads, allocate resources and monitor progress to maximise efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory, legislative and safety requirements.
  • Support fleet and transport management to maintain vehicles and equipment.
  • Identify training needs and arrange staff instruction on vehicles, plant and equipment.
  • Prepare reports, risk assessments, Safe Systems of Work and deliver toolbox talks.
  • Assist with complaint investigations, enforcement duties and service-level agreements.
  • Contribute to tender preparation, procurement of PPE and materials, and cross‑departmental working groups.

Performance Improvement

  • Implement the Council's performance management framework within the team.
  • Set and monitor performance objectives, support staff development and address performance issues.
  • Contribute to business planning, service reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Explore opportunities for efficiency, innovation and best value.
  • Provide strong leadership to promote teamwork, innovation and high service standards.


Financial & Resource Management

  • Work within agreed budgets and support effective financial management.
  • Raise purchase orders, contribute to audits and implement recommendations.


About YouWe're looking for someone who can bring:

  • Strong operational management experience, ideally within waste, environmental or public services.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • A proactive approach to problem‑solving, service improvement and team development.
  • A thorough understanding of health & safety, risk management and statutory compliance.
  • The ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.
  • High levels of personal accountability, professionalism and integrity.
  • Applicants must be qualified to a minimum of degree level in a relevant discipline such as Management Practice or Environmental Service.
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate, by providing personal and specific examples, that they have two years' experience in the Management of an Operational Service delivering successful outcomes.
