The role
We are seeking an Assistant Management Accountant to support one of the six Directorates within Natural Resources Wales. You will join a collaborative team of five Management Accountants and two Assistant Accountants who work closely with their Directorate Leadership Teams to set budgets, monitor performance, forecast future spend, and report on financial positions. A key part of the role is helping to embed efficiencies, identify risks and opportunities, and support challenging planning and prioritisation decisions. Your work will ensure the Directorate has the resources it needs to deliver its operational plan both now and in future years.

As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.
What you will do
  • Support other Finance staff and budget managers throughout the organisation on the management of resources, including the provision of advice, guidance and training.
  • Supporting cost centre and project managers is establishing expenditure and income plans, where applicable, for medium term financial planning escalating as appropriate to Business Finance Accountants.
  • Support the detailed budget setting exercise (for designated area of responsibility). Supporting cost centre and project managers is establishing expenditure and income profiled plans for the financial year.
  • Monitor financial performance (for designated area of responsibility), providing advice and guidance, as relevant, to Business Boards and Workforce Planning Groups (through the relevant Business/Management Accountant) and identify areas of risk/opportunity. Ensure these are communicated and acted upon appropriately. Escalate where necessary.
  • Ensure the control and accuracy of financial information held on MyNRW and Reports, including the maintenance of cost centre and project structures.
  • Advocate compliance with our Financial Scheme of Delegation, identifying and then either resolving or referring issues to the specialists for resolution.
  • Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.Accounting Technician qualification or qualified by experience. Experience working within a Finance environment at a technical level. Knowledge of 'Managing Welsh Public Money' Principles & HMT's 'Classification of Receipts'. Understand a wide range of our business and environmental activities. Knowledge and understanding of our Finance Scheme of Delegation with an ability to advise others. Welsh Language level requirements
  • Essential: Level A1 - Entry level
