This role is suitable for therapists who are developing their practice within deafness, as well as those with more established experience who wish to further consolidate specialist and leadership skills.
The post offers structured clinical supervision, access to specialist training, and opportunities for professional development within a highly supportive, multidisciplinary team.
You will provide Speech and Language Therapy assessment and intervention for deaf children and young people in Luton, working in partnership with families, education settings, Teachers of the Deaf, and other professionals. You will contribute to holistic, child-centred assessment and intervention planning to support communication, language, and educational outcomes.
For Band 6 therapists, the role will provide opportunities to develop specialist knowledge and clinical competence in the area of deafness through regular supervision, mentoring, joint working, and access to relevant training. Clinical responsibilities will be appropriate to experience, with clear progression and development expectations.
For Band 7 therapists, the post will involve delivering Speech and Language Therapy at a highly specialist level within deafness, demonstrating clinical leadership, and supporting service development. You will represent the service in relevant meetings and contribute to the ongoing development and quality of provision for deaf children and young people within Luton’s integrated partnership model.
Across all levels, you will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary and multi-agency framework, contributing to service evaluation, professional learning, and best practice in line with NHS values and standards

Job Purpose:
The post is commissioned by Luton Borough Council to provide Specialist Speech and Language Therapy intervention and support to deaf children and young people who are attending primary and secondary school age specialist deaf provisions and those who are on the peripatetic caseload of the Deaf Children and Young People Service.
You will:
Provide Speech and Language Therapy at a highly specialist level, within the area of deafness, functioning in partnership with other agencies and disciplines to support in the holistic assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children and young people known to the service.
You will demonstrate clinical leadership in deafness and represent the local team/service area in appropriate meetings to support and develop quality services for deaf children and young people within Luton in an integrated partnership model, where possible.Provide assessment, advice and therapy where appropriate to children and young people with hearing impairment with and without EHCPs across Luton
Provide intervention and support tothose deaf children and young people who attend deaf specialist provisions in the mainstream schools and those who are supported by peripatetic Teachers of the Deaf either in their home environment or in their pre-school or school setting.
To provide regular reports on activities and outcomes of interventions to LBC
To identify, assess and diagnose communication impairments and select appropriate therapy for effective treatment.
To provide written reports and contribute to the EHCP assessment process as required.
Contributing to annual reviews/case conferences and meetings as required
Make independent decisions about caseload management.
Gain extensive clinical experience and expertise to improve and further develop specialist skills through training, support and study
Provide second opinions to less experienced colleagues
Be responsible for providing ongoing training and advice to the wider Speech and Language Therapy team, school teaching assistants/communicators SENCOs and teachers and volunteers
Devise and deliver training to parents as appropriate.
Deliver training within the school environment as required.
Contribute to the support of newly and recently graduated SLT Staff
Measure the impact of the work within the HIP service and provide reporting data as required.
Take responsibility for service wide developments as appropriate.

Take a clinical lead role in service development in this area
To represent the SLT service within wider local and national groups
Have a specialist advisory role for the Trust in this specialty area, giving service wide second and expert opinions.
Independently take students on placement for clinical teaching and supervision, including exam placement
Take a clinical leadership role for qualified and unqualified staff working at lower grades and volunteers.
To ensure that own behaviour and decision making supports the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of service users and professional colleagues.
To present and communicate complex condition-related information in such a manner as to motivate and inform patients, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions, agreeing decision-making relevant to patient management
To use exceptional interpersonal skills to listen well and counsel families and carers, so providing support and empathy without prejudice.
To use negotiation skills to manage conflict as needed across a range of situations.
To establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with other staff which are characterised by open communication, trust and respect.
To communicate effectively with patients with communication problems where difficulties to understanding exist, using observation, listening and empathy.
Budgetary Responsibility
To monitor stock levels in own service area and request new equipment as appropriate
Does not hold budgetary responsibility but is aware of the need to plan non- pay expenditure.

3. The post holder must adhere to the Trust risk assessment and risk management processes

5. To adhere to CCS trust and LBC record keeping policies and procedures, maintaining up to date and accurate case notes in line with professional standards and local trust policies
6. It is a condition of your employment that you are currently registered with HCPC and RCSLT, and it is your responsibility to maintain your professional registration.
7. Undertake annual appraisal and mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust.
