Job Summary:
As a QA Specialist – Fire Detection, you will be responsible for quality assurance of the installation, testing, and commissioning readiness of complete fire detection and alarm systems at the AESC Gigafactory Sunderland. This includes control and indicating equipment (panels), detectors, interfaces, power supplies, cabling, ancillary devices, and VESDA (aspirating smoke detection) systems.
The role is focused on ensuring all works are delivered in accordance with BS 5839, approved design documentation, manufacturers’ requirements, and best industry practice, with a strong emphasis on attention to detail, defect prevention, and long-term system reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
• Carry out QA inspections of fire alarm control panels, networked panels, power supplies, detectors, interfaces, sounders, visual alarm devices, and ancillary equipment
• Inspect installation of VESDA / aspirating smoke detection systems, including pipework routing, sampling point layout, pipe labelling, detector configuration, and airflow integrity
• Verify compliance with BS 5839 (all applicable parts), design drawings, cause & effect matrices, and manufacturers’ installation instructions
• Confirm correct installation of primary and standby power supplies, battery sizing, segregation, and resilience
• Review cabling standards, containment, fire stopping, device addressing, zoning, and system labelling
• Witness and review inspection, testing, and commissioning activities, including functional testing and interface operation
• Review and approve QA records, inspection checklists, test results, as-built drawings, and O&M documentation
• Identify non-conformances, defects, or workmanship issues and ensure corrective actions are implemented and closed out
• Support defect prevention strategies to minimise future defect claims and latent system failures
• Liaise with site management, installers, commissioning engineers, fire engineers, and client representatives
• Participate in audits, quality reviews, and system handover processes
Essential Skills & Experience:
• Demonstrable experience in QA, inspection, installation oversight, or commissioning of fire detection and alarm systems
• Strong working knowledge of BS 5839 (essential)
• Practical experience with panels, detectors, interfaces, power supplies, and VESDA / aspirating detection systems
• Excellent attention to detail with a structured, evidence-based quality approach
• Ability to identify installation defects, compliance gaps, and future reliability risks
• Experience on large-scale industrial, manufacturing, or complex construction projects
