Summary

The Undergraduate Education Lead (Clinical) provides senior clinical academic leadership in the design, delivery, and continuous enhancement of clinical education across the facultys undergraduate programmes. Working with the Executive Dean, Pro-Dean, and Undergraduate Education Lead (Non-Clinical), the postholder ensures that the faculty delivers a high-quality, future-facing clinical curriculum that prepares graduates with the knowledge, skills, and professional values required for contemporary healthcare practice, with patient safety, professionalism, and quality of care embedded throughout all stages of clinical education. The role involves close collaboration with NHS and community partners, academic colleagues, and professional services teams to ensure educational quality, regulatory compliance, and sufficient clinical training capacity. As a senior member of the Faculty Leadership Team, the postholder will contribute to faculty level strategic planning, promote innovation in simulation and technology-enhanced learning, strengthen clinical educator development, and ensure that students experience outstanding, equitable, and safe learning across all clinical environments. The postholder will play a central role in forward-looking clinical education planning, aligning curriculum delivery with workforce needs, service pressures, and emerging models of care. The role requires a visionary leader who can translate clinical excellence into educational innovation, aligning patient safety principles with curriculum design, assessment, and clinical supervision ensuring that students experience outstanding, equitable, and safe learning across all clinical environments. Key Responsibilities Excellent written, electronic and oral communication conveying information clearly and accurately. Communicate effectively about matters relating to healthcare education with clinical leaders and educators across the LEPs and the wider healthcare community Influence and negotiate with multi-disciplinary teams and external partners to provide clinical placements. Promote effective use of feedback to enhance learning, clinical judgement, and readiness for practice. Contribute to the Facultys recruitment and widening participation strategies, representing the faculty at open days, selection activities, and outreach events. Utilise enhanced communication and facilitation skills when delivering training and development sessions to ensure effective transfer of knowledge. Participate in Faculty Executive meetings, contributing to cross-Faculty leadership and delivery of strategic priorities. Contribute to key Faculty and University committees to advance teaching quality, professionalism, and educational excellence. Regularly contribute to local education providers meetings Provide annual, and other reports as required Maintain a professional, confident, and diplomatic approach, using tact, mediation, and negotiation skills to build and sustain effective working relationships. Liaison and Networking Establish and maintain effective working relationships across the clinical placement providers. Represent the Faculty in regional, national, and international forums, influencing policy, shaping workforce initiatives, and strengthening partnerships with NHS, professional, and regulatory bodies. Lead the strategic development of clinical training capacity through strong partnerships with NHS Trusts, Primary Care Networks, community, and independent healthcare providers. Collaborate with the Faculty Leadership Team and placement providers to secure and expand placement capacity, ensuring alignment with workforce planning. Engage collaboratively with NHS partners, professional bodies, and regulators to ensure alignment between education delivery and healthcare service needs. Represent the Faculty within professional and academic networks, enhancing its reputation for excellence in clinical education. Service Delivery Oversee the integration of clinical education across undergraduate programmes and multiple locations, ensuring consistency, safety, and equity of the student experience. Provide clinical direction to placement planning and supervision, ensuring learning environments are safe, inclusive, and educationally effective. Lead the integration of simulation into the clinical curriculum to strengthen patient safety, clinical preparedness, and interprofessional learning. Ensure an outstanding student experience in clinical education by promoting equitable access to placements, proactive response to feedback, and an inclusive, supportive learning culture. Decision Making Processes and Outcomes Make timely and considered decisions (independent, collaborative and advisory). Provide advice or input to contribute to the decision-making of others. Participate in appeals and review processes in accordance with university regulations and governance frameworks. Planning and Organising Resources Contribute to portfolio development by identifying and supporting new programmes, interdisciplinary initiatives, and externally funded curriculum projects. Provide leadership for the design and delivery of student choice and elective components in clinical years, ensuring relevance, quality, and alignment with Faculty priorities. Initiative and Problem Solving Participate in initiatives to enhance the quality of the student academic experience and outcomes, using feedback from the National Student Survey (NSS) and other mechanisms to drive evidence-based improvement in teaching, learning, and clinical placements. Analysis and Research Drive innovation and excellence in clinical education, ensuring alignment with GMC, PSRB, and University standards and responsiveness to evolving healthcare practice. Lead the validation, review, and enhancement of clinical programme components, maintaining continuous improvement in teaching and learning. Provide input into assessment design and standards, ensuring that methods reflect clinical practice and professional competencies. Contribute to the development, validation, and quality assurance of assessment items, ensuring fairness, integrity, and consistency. Promote and support the integration of undergraduate students into clinical research networks and projects, working collaboratively with academic and NHS partners. Team Development Lead and coordinate the training and development of academic staff, clinical educators, and educational supervisors in line with PSRB standards, including GMC 'Training the Trainer' standards, ensuring that all educators are appropriately selected, inducted, supported, and appraised. Encourage and mentor colleagues in educational and pedagogic research, fostering innovation and scholarship in clinical education. Support and mentor colleagues, fostering a culture that recognises and rewards achievement in teaching and educational leadership. Foster a culture that values professionalism, teamwork, and integrity across all learning environments. Identify clinicians with a special interest in undergraduate education and promote recognition of their time commitment to this. Ensure educators and clinical staff who undertake undergraduate assessment are aware of the correct use of methodology and the appropriate level of attainment. Co-ordinate educator applications for University Honorary Status and their review Teamwork and Motivation Support the Executive Dean and Pro-Dean in shaping and delivering the facultys education strategy, providing leadership for clinical education and training across the facultys undergraduate programmes. Regular support of the clinical team formally and informally. Pro-actively contribute to administration, recruitment activities and to the collegial work environment. Teaching and Learning Support Promote innovation in simulation-based and technology-enhanced education, embedding these as core components of clinical learning, patient safety, and assessment. Provide academic and clinical leadership in the design, delivery, and enhancement of undergraduate clinical and healthcare education programmes, ensuring coherence, innovation, and compliance with PSRB standards. Embed simulation-based, digital, and research-informed learning throughout the curriculum to strengthen clinical preparedness, interprofessional collaboration, and patient-centred practice. Promote the inclusion of clinical research principles and opportunities within undergraduate programmes, cultivating a culture of inquiry and evidence-based practice among students. Champion the integration of simulation-based and technology-enhanced learning across all clinical curricula to prepare students for complex and evolving clinical practice. Promote excellence in clinical teaching and supervision through faculty development, peer learning, and partnership working across all placement sites. Personally contribute to teaching, supervision, and mentorship, modelling professional values, educational leadership, and reflective practice. Collaborate with the Assessment and Phase Leads to align clinical assessments with GMC and PSRB requirements, including MLA, PSA, and SJT, and to embed constructive alignment across formative and summative assessments. Support initiatives that enhance the student journey, including induction, academic support, co-creation, and extra-curricular learning. Knowledge and Experience The ideal candidate possesses in-depth knowledge and experience in the delivery of Healthcare education across multiple clinical settings, along with a proven track record of successfully leading and delivering projects Maintain clinical and academic credibility through continuous professional development and the dissemination of educational and clinical research.
