Specialist Interest in Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) & Virtual Ward Care

Location: Newham University Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust



We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant in Respiratory Medicine with a specialist interest in Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) to join our dynamic and forward-thinking respiratory team at Newham University Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity to combine tertiary ILD care with innovative Virtual Ward services, helping to shape modern respiratory pathways that support early discharge, remote monitoring, and patient-centred care. You will work closely with a well-established multidisciplinary ILD team across our network, including tertiary services based at St Bartholomew’s and Mile End Hospital.

Pending Royal College approval

The successful applicant will join our dynamic Respiratory department as a substantive Respiratory Medicine Consultant with a special interest Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). The post includes 10 PA of activity. This post is currently pending Royal College of Physicians approval.



This role offers an exciting opportunity for an ILD specialist to lead the integration of Virtual Ward technology into respiratory care pathways. In alignment with national NHS strategic goals, the post-holder will utilize remote monitoring to facilitate early discharge and reduce avoidable hospital stays. You will be instrumental in creating a seamless, holistic journey for ILD patients, combining traditional outpatient excellence with innovative, home-based clinical oversight.



The post holder will join the multidisciplinary ILD team which is based at St Bartholomew’s and Mile End Hospital, delivering tertiary care to patients in North East London with ILD and sarcoidosis.



The postholder will attend a regular Barts Health ILD MDT to present new cases and review current patients who may need treatment initiated or adjusted. There will be opportunities for multidisciplinary clinics – ILD/Rheumatology and other collaborative working.

The postholder will contribute to the general medical on call rota – current frequency of 1 in 18. The unselected medical take numbers vary but average approximately 30-35 patients over a 24-hour period. The on-call medical consultant is supported by2 SpRs during the day, plus 4-6 residents doctors. Overnight the resident doctors support is2 SpRs and 3 SHOs.The admissions are unselected older (>75 years) and younger adult patients.



Overnight off-site cover is provided from home and a morning post take ward round lasting approximately 2hrs begins at 8am the following morning. Weekends will include an additional mid-take ward round at 4pm. The current frequency of on calls is 1 in 18. There will be consideration for time off in lieu for any on calls which fall on bank holidays.



The acute unselected take is well supported, with round the clock clinical advice available from most specialities. Access to specialist input is one of the most keenly felt benefits of working within a large Trust like Barts Health. A well run, supportive ‘Hub and Spoke’ model exists, with robust pathways to many tertiary centres. Collaborative working exists across the Trust and the commitment to reduce health inequalities is at the core of the WeShare values.
