Working Hours: Monday – Thursday: 07:00 – 16:00, Friday: 07:00 – 15:00
Salary: £55,000 – £60,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
Holidays: 5 weeks annual leave plus statutory public holidays
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Engineering Workshop Manager to join a long-established business providing mechanical engineering and power transmission services to customers across the North of England. As Engineering Workshop Manager, you will have overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of the workshop, including managing staff, coordinating workflows, scheduling jobs, maintaining equipment and safety standards, ensuring quality control, and communicating with customers. This role will suit a hands-on Workshop Manager who thrives in a busy, fast-paced environment and enjoys variety in their role. The business provides a breakdown service to customers, meaning some jobs require same-day turnaround. The ability to adapt schedules, multitask, and make effective decisions under pressure is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Workshop Management
• Coordinate daily workshop operations, ensuring efficient workflows and effective scheduling.
• Monitor and control job progress, working closely with engineers, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure delivery within allocated times.
• Plan work activities and liaise with the production office regarding purchasing requirements.
• Complete purchase requisitions for job-specific materials and services.
• Maintain oversight of workshop expenditure, stock levels, and stock take.
• Provide technical support to a team of multi-skilled engineers and operatives.
• Liaise with the sales team to assist with quotations and provide regular updates on job progress to manage customer expectations.
Quality & Efficiency
• Develop, implement, and maintain standards for quality, safety, and efficiency.
• Carry out pre-, mid-, and post-job inspections, including inspection of subcontracted processes.
• Monitor the condition of machinery, equipment, and tooling to ensure maintenance schedules are met and safety standards maintained.
Client & Supplier Liaison
• Act as a key point of contact for clients.
• Manage relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.
Safety & Compliance
• Ensure full compliance with health and safety regulations.
• Conduct risk assessments and maintain equipment safety.
• Maintain high standards of workshop cleanliness and organisation.
Production Meetings
• Take an active role in weekly production meetings.
• Provide updates on job progress and highlight any delivery risks or challenges.
Personnel Management
• Manage team performance and conduct regular appraisals.
• Be involved in the recruitment and onboarding of engineers.
Experience & Skills Required
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Workshop Manager role within a mechanical engineering environment.
• Time-served engineer.
• Strong technical knowledge of manual machining and mechanical repair work.
• Proven ability to manage urgent and breakdown work, adapting plans to meet customer requirements.
• Experience leading, managing, and motivating engineering teams.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience managing budgets and controlling costs.
• Strong computer skills and confidence learning new systems.
