Job Summary To perform physiotherapeutic assessment of patients with diverse presentations and physical and psychological conditions, to provide a diagnosis and develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme. To hold responsibility for own case load and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working without direct supervision. Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical supervision sessions, peer review, case conferences. Access to advice and support from specialist physiotherapists is available on a daily basis; clinical work is not routinely evaluated. To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner. To supervise, educate and assess the performance of physiotherapy students and Therapy support staff. This would be to a graduate standard and involve working with universities to ensure the standard of practice and teaching meets the standards set by the degree level qualification. To participate in 7 day and Bank Holiday working rota and extended hours (e.g., evenings til 8pm) when required. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibility for People Management To be an active member of the in-service training programme by attendance at and participation in, in-service training programmes, tutorials, individual training sessions, external courses and peer review. This will include teaching and contributing to planning training when appropriate. To be actively involved in professional clinical groups, such as Journal Clubs, CSP Clinical Interest Groups, Peer Review Groups and other professional development activities. To participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraiser, when qualified to do so. To attend Student educator training and actively support student placements within the team. To ensure that your own practice and that of staff under your supervision meets the required professional standards of physiotherapy practice. To be responsible for the supervision and co-ordination of students and assistants on a daily basis. To provide clinical education and training to physiotherapy students to graduate level. Provide support, guidance and training to assistants, including assessing and evaluating competence. To train, supervise and performance manage support staff and students, with assistance from more specialist members of the physiotherapy team. This will include the use of formal appraisal documentation. To take a flexible approach to supporting colleagues in times of caseload pressure, including working with colleagues to maintain clinical cover across the team within the resources available. To provide planned and spontaneous specialist advice and teaching to relatives, carers and other professions and agencies involved in the patients care. Responsibility for financial and/or physical resources. To follow policy and guidance around the security, useability, decontamination, and maintenance of assessment equipment utilised in the clinical setting. To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all gym equipment, electrotherapy equipment and patient appliances and aids used by patients. Ensure that support staff attain competency prior to use of equipment. To ensure New and replacement equipment is not used by self or staff until it has been commissioned in accordance with Livewell Southwest policy. Defective equipment is reported and made safe without delay in accordance with Livewell Southwest procedures. On the rare occasion you may handle patient valuables as part of a home visit or community assessment, that you follow Livewell SWs policy Cash & Cheque Handling Procedures, section 6 Patient Money, section 7 Patient Travel. Professional Practice and Responsibility for administrative functions. To participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with your agreed personal development programmes to meet set knowledge and competencies. To actively engage in caseload supervision with line manager: All staff are required to ensure knowledge regarding health and social care legislation is up to date. Namely, the Care Act 2014 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) at a level deemed essential for their role. The level of training required, and subsequent assessment tools used to apply legislation, will be role dependent. It is important that staff understand and comply with local policies and procedures relating to the MCA to ensure Livewell Southwest can act in an individuals best interest when providing care. This helps to ensure ongoing adherence to our legal obligations and ensuring we put the needs of our patients first. To ensure all leave is requested in line with Livewell Southwest policy. To follow Livewell uniform policy at all times, and to present in a professional manner. To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities, and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development. To develop skills and knowledge through participation in the Preceptorship programme and to go on to support future preceptees, in the capacity as a Preceptor. To keep abreast of professional and national standards and clinical guidelines e.g. National Service Frameworks, NICE guidelines. To maintain and develop current knowledge of evidenced-based practice in the areas of each rotation, developing specialist knowledge of particular conditions and patient types. To undertake the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices through the use of evidence-based practice projects, audit and outcome measures, either individually or with Specialist Physiotherapists. To be responsible for organising and planning own caseload to meet service and patient priorities. Readjust plans as situations change/arise. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) standards of practice and local/organisational policy. To provide written communication with outside agencies and charitable bodies to support the need for services and equipment on discharge or when transferred. To refer to follow up services to ensure treatment programmes are in place to progress functional independence based on identified needs at discharge. Demonstrating to and informing community staff re ongoing patient needs in the community i.e., home carers and reablement assistance. To comply with the Lone Working Policy and procedures, utilising safety devices and/or apps, informing and updating the department of your whereabouts at all times during work hours. When working in the community and domiciliary settings, work as a lone practitioner with telephone support from a Specialist Physiotherapist if required.
