Deputy Manager / Deputy Officer in Charge
Responsible to
Nursery Manager / Officer in Charge
Purpose of the Post
The Deputy Manager / Deputy Officer in Charge will work under the direction of the Nursery Manager and deputise in her absence as required. The role is to support the effective management of the nursery, ensuring the delivery of high-quality childcare and education in line with statutory requirements, nursery policies, and best practice.
The post holder will contribute to providing a safe, caring, and stimulating environment that promotes the emotional, social, physical, and educational development of all children, while supporting and leading staff effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
Promote the aims, objectives, and high standards of the nursery at all times.
Deputise for the Nursery Manager in her absence.
Lead, direct, and support staff to ensure good practice and effective teamwork.
Ensure staff time is used efficiently and duties are appropriately delegated.
Assist the Manager in setting, implementing, and reviewing nursery policies, procedures, and objectives.
Support staff development, supervision, and training, including students on placement.
Attend and participate in all required out-of-hours activities, including training, planning meetings, staff meetings, events, and celebrations.
Safeguarding, Health & Safety
Ensure high standards of physical and emotional care for all children.
Be responsible for health and safety standards appropriate to young children and ensure staff compliance.
Maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness at all times.
Maintain staff awareness of fire drills and emergency procedures in line with the code of practice.
Ensure confidentiality of all sensitive information.
Quality of Care and Education
Support the monitoring, assessment, and recording of children’s development.
Ensure the nursery provides a high-quality environment that meets the needs of all children, respecting cultural, religious, and developmental differences.
Assist in preparing, maintaining, and monitoring resources, materials, and equipment to ensure they are complete and fit for purpose.
Administration and Organisation
Assist with staffing rotas, holiday planning, and deployment to maintain required ratios in line with local authority and Ofsted requirements.
Support administrative procedures including registration, admissions, and place allocation.
Assist with the upkeep, maintenance, and efficient running of the building, equipment, furnishings, and fittings.
Partnership Working
Support the Manager in showing parents around the nursery and providing relevant information.
Liaise effectively with parents, carers, and family members to meet children’s individual needs and respect parental choice.
Liaise with external agencies and professionals as required to support children and families.
Additional Duties
Ensure the nursery environment is kept clean, tidy, and well-resourced at all times.
Undertake any other duties of an equivalent nature as required by the Nursery Manager.
