The Opportunity

Based in our state-of-the-art CUBE Construction Centre, this is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of the plumbing and heating industry. As a Plumbing Lecturer at Barnsley College, you’ll play a vital role in developing the next generation of skilled professionals through high-quality teaching and industry-focused training.

You’ll deliver a balanced mix of practical and theory-based sessions, covering key areas such as health and safety, hot and cold-water systems, central heating, and system design. Your teaching will reflect both traditional methods and modern industry practices, using up-to-date tools, equipment and materials that mirror the workplace.
Working alongside a knowledgeable and supportive team, you’ll teach across Apprenticeship Standards, T Levels and Technical Qualifications. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to curriculum development and create clear, engaging lesson plans and learning resources that inspire and challenge learners.

You’ll assess learner progress, provide constructive and timely feedback, and set achievable targets to support success. Student support is a key part of the role—guiding, motivating and challenging learners throughout their journey. This includes taking part in reviews, contributing to pastoral support, and working closely with colleagues in English, Maths and Tutorial Support to ensure learners receive a well-rounded educational experience.

You’ll also support the learner journey from the very start by assisting with interviews, assessments and enrolment. Health and safety is paramount, and you’ll ensure all workshop procedures are followed, including the correct use of PPE. Your contribution will directly support strong student outcomes, progression and retention, helping the continued growth and success of the Construction department.

This is a highly rewarding role where you can use your industry expertise to make a genuine difference within a forward-thinking and ambitious college.

About You

You’ll bring strong, hands-on experience in plumbing and heating, supported by current knowledge of both established techniques and modern systems. You understand the realities of the industry and are keen to pass that knowledge on to learners building their own skills and confidence.

You’re passionate about helping others succeed. Whether you’re an experienced lecturer or an industry professional ready to move into education, you’re motivated to share your expertise in a clear, supportive and engaging way. If you don’t already hold a teaching qualification, you’re willing to work towards one.

You’re able to adapt your teaching approach to meet the needs of different learners and use a variety of delivery methods to keep sessions engaging and effective. You’re confident in developing strategies that improve attendance, retention, achievement, success rates and value added, keeping learners motivated and on track.

Approachable and supportive, you understand the academic and pastoral needs of learners. You provide clear, constructive feedback that helps learners recognise their strengths and understand how to improve. You communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and you’re well organised when it comes to planning, assessment and administration.

Health and safety in the workshop come naturally to you, and you ensure correct procedures are always followed. You enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues across the college to provide learners with the best possible experience.
Above all, you’re committed to helping learners develop real, transferable skills, grow in confidence and successfully progress into employment, further training or a rewarding career in the industry.

Below is a list of some of the key skills, qualifications and experience we are seeking for this exciting opportunity.
