Mechanical Engineer
Location: Horsham
Salary: £35,000 – £45,000
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join a growing design and manufacturing business specialising in precision rotary mechanisms for surveillance and fire-control solutions in the defence and high‑technology sectors. The role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of concepts and turning them into robust, manufacturable products for use in harsh environments.
The Role
- Design innovative electro‑mechanical mechanisms and precision machinery from concept through to production.
- Perform classical engineering analysis (stress, fatigue, vibration), using both hand calculations and computer-based simulation tools.
- Produce detailed engineering and assembly drawings for manufacture and support verification testing in the lab to ensure designs meet specifications.
- Prepare and contribute to engineering reports, including new product design justifications and failure investigations.
- Work closely with electronics, control and drive engineers to integrate multi‑discipline systems into complete equipment solutions.
- Provide engineering support to production, test and field service teams, and assist sales with technical input for bids and quotations.
- Create and develop 3D CAD models and drawings using SolidWorks.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- 2+ years’ experience in a mechanical engineering role.
- Proven track record designing complex mechanisms and structures for harsh environments (ideally defence or similarly demanding sectors).
- Experience taking systems from original specification and concept through to production release.
- Ability to analyse and design components such as gear drives, bearings and motor interfaces.
- Good understanding of machining, casting, fabrication and moulding manufacturing processes.
- Proficient user of SolidWorks (3D CAD).
