Summary

Working Pattern:Hybrid- 2 days per week in Birmingham.

Hays are working with one of our key public sector clients, based in Birmingham, to recruit for an interim Paralegal position within their Housing team. This role manages legal housing review cases from start to finish within six weeks, ensuring thorough investigation, clear communication and timely decisions. Responsibilities include gathering evidence from professionals, drafting minded‑to letters, reviewing representations and reassessing decisions when required. The postholder will handle complex claims, including those from organisations such as Shelter and Central England Law Centre, covering issues like disrepair, family composition and mobility needs, with occasional oral submissions. The role requires strong housing law experience-particularly s.202 and s.204 reviews-plus knowledge of homelessness legislation, suitability assessments and civil litigation.
Role Duties
- Manage legal review cases from start to finish, typically concluding within 6 weeks.
- Investigate cases thoroughly, request additional information from GPs, OTs, schools and other professionals.
- Draft and issue letters, review responses, and reassess decisions where necessary.
- Handle claims submitted via third‑party organisations (e.g., Shelter, Central England Law Centre), including issues relating to disrepair, family composition and mobility needs.
- Take full ownership of cases, ensuring clear communication and timely outcomes.
- Potential for some oral submissions when requested.
Experience & Skills Required
- Strong housing law experience, particularly around s.202 and s.204 reviews.
- Solid understanding of homelessness legislation and accommodation suitability assessments.
- Background as a Housing Paralegal or similar role within housing law.
- Ability to identify and interpret key housing issues and make informed decisions.
- Experience in civil litigation and/or housing disrepair matters.
- Familiarity with HHSRS desirable.
- Local authority experience strongly preferred.
- No formal legal qualification required.
