We are looking for a Selective Licensing Officer, who will protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our residents through raising housing standards through our Selective Licensing schemes in Scarborough.
Our Service
The purpose of our Private Housing Standards Service is to improve housing standards ensuring all privately rented accommodation is well managed, properly maintained, safe and habitable. This is achieved by providing advice and guidance and where necessary by enforcing relevant legislation to deliver the Councils statutory Housing functions.
The Role
As our next Selective Licensing Officer, you will be a critical member of the team, you will support the operational delivery of the Private Housing Standards Service by ensuring that landlords who privately rent out properties in the designated areas apply for a licence, submitting relevant certification for safety checks, have appropriate management in place and complying with a range of licensing conditions.
You will also:
· Carry out inspections of privately rented properties in the designated areas.
· Draft warning letters, notices, and schedules of work.
· Arrange for works to be undertaken in default as necessary.
· Review and issue licence applications and maintain a register of licensed properties.
· Provide appropriate advice and guidance to landlord, letting agents, property managers and tenants.
· Assist in the promotion and publicity of licensing schemes.
· Provide appropriate advice, guidance, and interpretation of relevant legislation in line with the professional service of the post, as required.
· Support the Environmental Health Officer’s to collect, prepare and present admissible evidence for legal proceedings, including the preparation of statements and giving evidence in court and tribunals when required.

· Knowledge and commitment to quality customer focussed services with good problem-solving skills and the ability to find innovative solutions
· Knowledge of local authority practices and procedures and understanding of how policies/procedures can be applied in practice to result in required outcomes
· Experience of partnership working with internal and external stakeholders
· Track record of providing professional advice, guidance and support
· Understanding of traditional/non-traditional methods of construction and general property maintenance, understanding of property management
· Understanding of current Building Regulations and Planning Requirements
