PENN HILL SURGERY JOB DESCRIPTION POST: Treatment Room Nurse Salary: Dependent on experience Hours of Work: 24 initially but potential to rise to 32 hours per week Department: Practice Nurses Accountable To: Nurse Manager & Practice Manager 1. JOB SUMMARY To work as a member of a dynamic and versatile nursing team, supporting our patients and wider primary care team. Clinical Duties Deliver high-quality, evidence-based nursing care within the treatment room and general practice setting. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with acute and long-term conditions. Provide timely nursing interventions and prioritise care, including in urgent or emergency situations. Use clinical judgement to make safe decisions in line with scope of practice and practice policies. Undertake health promotion and opportunistic screening, including lifestyle advice, smoking cessation, weight management, and disease prevention. Provide patient education and guidance on medication regimes, side effects, and self-management where appropriate. Support the delivery of recall, surveillance, and screening programmes (QOF, IIF, LES/DES etc). Accurately document all consultations using the practice clinical system and templates. Treatment Room Skills The post holder will deliver some or all of the following (non-exhaustive): Wound assessment and care, dressings, and post-operative care Leg ulcer management Urinalysis Contraceptive advice, sexual health support Cervical cytology (if qualified) INR/Warfarin monitoring ECG recording Phlebotomy, blood pressure monitoring, weight checks Immunisations and vaccinations (childhood, seasonal, adult, travel if applicable) Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections (e.g., B12, Zoladex, Triptorelin, Depo) Assistance with procedures such as coil removal, contraceptive implants or minor surgery Stock control, cold chain management, and vaccine ordering 3. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Confidentiality Maintain confidentiality at all times according to practice policies, GDPR, and professional codes of conduct. Ensure patient information is shared only with authorised persons in line with legal and policy requirements in line with GDPR and NHS standards. Health & Safety / Infection Prevention & Control Actively promote and maintain a safe working environment. Follow infection prevention and control protocols and maintain a clean, safe clinical area. Identify and report hazards, risks, or incidents according to practice procedures. Use equipment safely and ensure personal security systems are followed. Support the training of colleagues, students or new staff where appropriate. Quality & Governance Contribute to practice audits, research and quality improvement initiatives. Reflect on own practice and participate in peer learning to enhance team performance. Follow practice policies, protocols and clinical guidance Report quality and safety concerns appropriately and contribute to risk mitigation. Communication Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, carers and colleagues. Recognise and adapt communication style to meet patient needs. Engage in daily clinical discussions, handover and practice meetings. Monitor and respond to clinical system tasks, messages and results in a timely manner. Service Delivery Support the implementation of new initiatives, pathways and models of care. Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver integrated services. Participate in development of policies and procedures relevant to nursing and treatment room services. 4. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Criteria Qualifications Registered Nurse (NMC). Demonstrates insight into current issues in nursing and primary care. Willingness to undertake training relevant to general practice. Experience Evidence of appropriate clinical knowledge and skills. Understanding of long-term condition management. Knowledge of audit and clinical governance. Awareness of safeguarding, infection control, and H&S responsibilities. Skills and Abilities Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong clinical assessment and decision-making abilities. Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team. Competent IT skills and ability to use clinical systems. Able to work under pressure and adapt to change. Other Ability to work core practice hours. Flexibility to provide cover during staff absence. Full driving licence and access to transport (if required for role). Desirable Criteria Qualifications / Training Post-registration study related to primary care or treatment room practice. Cytology training. Immunisation training. Mentorship/teaching qualification. Advanced Life Support. Experience Previous experience in general practice or community nursing. Experience using EMIS clinical system. Experience in chronic disease management (e.g., diabetes, COPD, asthma). Knowledge of NHS frameworks and primary care contractual requirements. Awareness of Fellowship or primary care career development programmes. Skills Experience working within MDTs and integrated care models. Experience of PGDs and PSDs. Ability to lead on specific clinical areas or service improvements.
