Location: Telford Street, Newport, NP19 0ES
Hours: 37 per week
Start Date: 26 January 2026
Duration: 12 weeks
Pay Rate: £13.68 PAYE / £17.67 Umbrella
IR35: Inside IR35
About the Client
Newport City Council’s Waste Enforcement and Environmental Services teams play a vital role in keeping the city clean, safe and well‑maintained. This temporary role supports essential frontline services during a period of staff absence.
The Role
As a Driver/Operative, you will support the delivery of waste, cleansing and environmental maintenance services across Newport. This is a hands‑on, physical role involving driving council vehicles, assisting with operational tasks and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
You will work as part of a wider team within Housing and Communities, contributing to the upkeep of public spaces and supporting the council’s commitment to community wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
Drive council vehicles safely and in line with regulations
Support waste, cleansing and environmental maintenance operations
Carry out manual handling tasks, including lifting, loading and moving materials
Follow daily work schedules and complete tasks within set timeframes
Maintain high standards of cleanliness and service delivery
Adhere to all health and safety procedures, reporting incidents or hazards
Work cooperatively with colleagues and supervisors
Represent the council positively when interacting with members of the public
Work outdoors in all weather conditions
Support additional duties as required by supervisors
Candidate Requirements
Experience in a similar operational, driving or manual handling role
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Good time‑management skills and the ability to meet targets
Strong customer service approach
Physically fit and able to undertake manual work
Willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions
Full UK driving licence (desirable unless specified otherwise in the full JD)
Reliable, motivated and committed to delivering high‑quality service
