ARC MK is an addictions service in Milton Keynes that provides support to residents with identified drug and alcohol needs. It also delivers accessible, evidence-based interventions for tobacco dependence, supporting smoking cessation, reducing related health harms and inequalities, and promoting improved health outcomes for the local population.
The NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) is preparing to make a new contribution to making England a ‘Smoke free society’, by 2030 and sets out the Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health with several recommendations for the Tobacco Control Plan. In addition, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NCE) Guidance NG209 also sets out what is required of stop smoking interventions including the provision of behavioural and licensed products such as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and prescribed stop smoking medications available for our residents.
The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users. As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings.
The post holder will contribute to supporting people already accessing ARC MK interventions, who want to stop smoking or using tobacco, contributing to the reduction of smoking rates thus improve the health of the local population, reduce smoking related ill health, disability and preventable death and reduce health inequalities.
The postholder will provide evidenced based, specialist behavioural support and advice to smokers who want to quit. They will be expected to deliver support through established community groups, one to one and telephone interventions. The postholder will be expected to deliver within locally defined areas covering a number of clinics in a range of settings.
The postholder will undertake local promotion of the service and engage with local partners, stakeholders and health professionals including GP surgeries and pharmacies ensuring high activity levels and service awareness. They will be responsible for the accurate recording of client information to improve health and deliver excellent care.
The service will be operational Monday to Friday, 9.00am-5.00pm with a late evening clinic for those who may be employed or cannot make daytime appointments.

Main duties and responsibilities:
· To provide smoking cessation advice and support through established groups, one-to-one and telephone interventions in local community settings.
· To provide smoking cessation interventions in line with the evidence base and to agreed National standards.
· To utilise motivational techniques, assess client’s motivation to quit smoking and maintain relationships with the client group to support smoking cessation.
· To develop an action plan with the client and discuss the use of appropriate pharmacological support suitable to them.
· To take responsibility for continuous learning knowledge of smoking cessation using the NCSCT online training packages.
· To establish and maintain operational links and relationships with a variety of professionals and organisations e.g. health professionals in primary and secondary care; workplaces; community groups particularly in targeted areas, and of deprivation.
- Extensive knowledge of evidence-based information on smoking cessation approaches and methods.
· To use agreed and established Outcome Monitoring Tools and any other relevant quality measures.
· To manage the transfer of individuals between agencies and services.
· To counsel individuals about their smoking, using motivational interviewing, relapse management and other evidence-based interventions.
· To ensure full risk assessment and risk management is delivered effectively, under supervision.
· To ensure the highest quality of service is delivered by following local and national quality and performance standards, guidance, protocols, procedures and practice guidelines.
· To ensure that all work is performed in accordance with Trust policies and procedures, including the Serious Incident policy.
