About the Role

Are you a resilient, creative, and patient educator looking to make a genuine difference in the lives of young people? We are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join our intensive alternative education provision. You will work within a specialized team to support students with emotional, behavioral, and complex learning difficulties in small group settings.

This is a role for someone who views inclusion as a core principle and has the passion to engage students who may face significant barriers to learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct Student Support: Work with individuals and small groups to ensure students remain on task and complete set activities.

  • Behavioral Management: Manage challenging behavior and special needs issues in collaboration with teaching staff.

  • Academic Contribution: Help implement lesson plans, deliver SEN interventions, and assist in student testing and assessments.

  • Specialist Duties: Take responsibility for specific areas such as speech therapy or individual student counseling as required.

  • Reporting & Liaison: Provide detailed written reports on complex needs and maintain regular contact with parents and external agencies (e.g., GPs, Educational Psychologists).

  • Classroom Leadership: Occasionally take responsibility for a whole class during the temporary absence of a teacher.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Qualifications: NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) and Level 2 English and Maths.

  • Experience: Proven experience teaching children with EAL, SEN, speech and language difficulties, or other complex needs.

  • Skills: Ability to work independently, implement effective behavior management strategies, and build strong rapport with students and families.

  • Flexibility: A willingness to respond to the needs of a small team and work flexibly.

Desirable:

  • Experience teaching in an alternative provision environment.

  • Knowledge of differentiation strategies and curriculum requirements (specifically Literacy and Numeracy).

  • Success in working with disaffected and emotionally vulnerable students.
