Why Choose a Jisc Apprenticeship?

At Jisc, we’re proud to foster a supportive and inclusive environment where every voice is valued. Our September 2026 apprenticeship programme offers a range of exciting opportunities designed to help you grow and thrive in the digital sector. Whether you're just beginning your journey or expanding on existing technical experience, we’ll provide the tools and training to help you succeed. We live by our guiding principles and welcome applicants who share our values and are driven by our mission to improve lives through digital transformation.

Your future team:

Our team operates at the heart of Jisc’s core internet services, ensuring reliable and secure connectivity for universities and colleges across the UK. We manage and deliver critical Domain Name System (DNS) services, including public-facing DNS hosting and resolution, which translate complex computer language into human-readable addresses. Handling over 1 billion DNS queries every week, we provide the essential infrastructure that keeps academic institutions online and connected. As custodians of these foundational services we work closely with teams such as Cyber Threat Intelligence, DDoS Protection, and the Network Operations Centre (NOC) to deliver resilience, scalability, and innovation services - maintaining DNS resolvers, hosting authoritative DNS records, and safeguarding the integrity of internet operations for the education sector.

Internally, we’re known for being a highly skilled, core engineering team with deep technical knowledge. We’re always learning, sharing ideas, and continually improving the systems we run. This is an excellent environment for anyone who enjoys complex technical challenges and wants to make a meaningful impact on national-scale academic infrastructure.

A Day in the Life of a Digital & Technology Apprentice – Architecture & Engineering Team at Jisc

No two days are the same, but the role combines hands-on technical problem-solving with learning opportunities that build toward managing critical national infrastructure. Day-to-day, you’ll assist with monitoring, threat detection, reporting, and analysis of core infrastructure and associated services.

Who we’re looking for:

Some experience in using various operating systems
Ability to plan, prioritise and manage resources within a collaborative team-based environment
Experience with scripting languages, such as Bash or Python for automation
Understanding of DNS or NTP and their uses on the Internet
Ability to write clear, concise documentation
Ability to anticipate change and adapt to new situations

Qualifications and training
A minimum of 104 UCAS points at A-Level (grades BCC) or an equivalent (e.g. BTEC) in a relevant STEM subject (science, technology, engineering or mathematics)

Entry requirements: There are different entry requirements depending on the apprenticeship level. You will need to have the following:

At least 5 GCSEs/or equivalent (including Maths and English) at grades 4+ (A-C) or above (please ensure these are visible on your CV, or you may risk your application being declined)
You are 16 years of age or over by the time you start your apprenticeship
A UK resident (for at least the past 3 years) with the right to work in the UK who will be living in England for the duration of the apprenticeship.
To qualify for the apprenticeship levy you need to reside in England or be able to work from an England Jisc office for a minimum of 3 days per week.
Not in full-time education (you can of course be in education when you apply but must have completed your studies by the time the apprenticeship starts.)

Eligibility: Please note that if you hold any of the below qualifications, we will not be able to offer you an apprenticeship.

A degree-level qualification (Level 6 or higher) in a digital or technology-related subject, such as:
BSc or BEng in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Cyber Security, Data Science, IT, or similar
Integrated Master’s degrees (e.g., MEng in Software Engineering)
Level 6 or 7 apprenticeships in digital/technology disciplines
Professional certifications equivalent to degree-level learning in a similar field (e.g., advanced vendor certifications with academic credit)

Sponsorship: Please note that this role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship

Supporting you with your online application:

We’re committed to an inclusive recruitment process that removes barriers and empowers you to showcase your talent. If you have a disability, long-term health condition, neurodivergent condition, or need reasonable adjustments for any other reason, there will be an opportunity to indicate this on your application.
