Role Purpose
The Design Technology Technician (QTS Qualified) will combine qualified teaching responsibilities with high-level technical and practical support within the Design & Technology department. The postholder will contribute directly to curriculum delivery while ensuring that workshops, equipment, materials, and learning environments are safe, well-resourced, and fit for purpose.
This role is suited to a qualified teacher who brings strong technical expertise and a practical, workshop-based approach to teaching Design & Technology.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Deliver high-quality Design & Technology lessons in line with departmental schemes of work and curriculum requirements.
- Plan, prepare and deliver lessons that engage learners of varying abilities within a practical DT environment.
- Assess, monitor and report on pupil progress in accordance with school policies.
-Maintain effective classroom and workshop management, ensuring positive behaviour for learning.
- Contribute to examination preparation, coursework support and practical assessments where applicable.
Technical and Practical Support
- Prepare, set up and maintain equipment, tools and materials for practical lessons.
- Provide technical guidance and demonstrations to support student learning and safe working practices.
- Support the effective use of workshop machinery, tools, and digital manufacturing equipment where applicable.
- Maintain an organised, safe and efficient workshop and preparation space.
- Health, Safety and Workshop Management
- Promote and maintain high standards of health and safety within all DT teaching and workshop activities.
- Carry out routine checks of equipment and machinery, reporting faults or safety concerns promptly.
- Support risk-aware working practices during all practical activities.
- Ensure tools, materials and equipment are safely stored and maintained.
Professional Responsibilities
- Participate in performance management, appraisal and professional review processes.
- Work collaboratively with teaching and support staff within the department.
- Contribute to departmental development, enrichment activities and the wider life of the school.
- Undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the role as directed by senior staff.
Person Specification
Essential
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Experience teaching Design & Technology at secondary level.
- Strong practical and technical knowledge relevant to DT environments.
- Ability to manage students effectively in practical workshop settings.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
Desirable
- Experience supporting or maintaining DT workshops or specialist equipment.
- Confidence working across multiple DT material areas in a generalist capacity.
