DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical1 Provide expert clinical knowledge and support to colleagues, patients and carers at the Trust and Network-wide on the management of post-operative pain.2 Independently assess, implement and evaluate patients with complex requirements, both post-operatively and in some treatment related situations.3 Ensure that all patient records, both written and electronic are accurate.4 Demonstrate enhanced communication skills when dealing with difficult or challenging situations.5 Manage clinical caseload, prioritising patient need across in-patient and out-patient settings to enable rapid response to calls for urgent advice.6 Participate in multi-disciplinary discussions on current caseload to ensure continuity and co-ordination of optimum patient care.7 Negotiate effectively with clinical colleagues across ward/departmental areas and the wider community.8 Flexible working hours to suit service needs9 Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies across Cancer Services to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to on-going pain management needs and discharge arrangements.10 To be flexible to the changes within the Pain Management Service and across the organisation.11 To undertake non-medical prescribing in clinical practice. Managerial and Clinical Leadership1. Provide specialist pain management knowledge to clinical colleagues, patients and carers both within and outside the Trust.2. Participate in the evaluation of service delivery and identify areas for improvement and initiate change 3. Assist in the development of bids to support pain service developments at the Trust.4. Guide, influence and implement pain and palliative/supportive care policy within the Trust.5. Support the development of supportive care services at local, regional and national level through active contribution at appropriate multi-disciplinary forums within the Trust.6. Support clinical developments/projects to promote excellence in patient care.7. Provide and receive clinical supervision and mentorship to facilitate reflective practice.8. Collect and collate data on the pain management service activity ensuring the delivery of a high quality cost-effective service. Education and Development1 To act as part of a highly specialist resource team within the hospital and assist with the assessment of pain management training needs across the range of disciplines.2 Maintain up to date high standard pain management skills and knowledge and maintain awareness of professional/national issues.3 Maintain enhanced communication skills.4 Identify pain management training needs Trust-wide and contribute to implementation and evaluation of teaching programmes accessible to colleagues within the multi-disciplinary team.5 Provide evidenced based education, information and training for a range of disciplines both internally and externally to the organisation.6 Contribute to the writing of policies and protocols applicable to the Pain Management Service.7 Maintain a professional portfolio and undertake NMC revalidation to demonstrate competency in line with Trust and NMC guidance.8 Act always in accordance with NMC Code of Conduct and guiding documents.9 Contribute to and participate in Service Reviews. Clinical Governance 1 Participate in clinical audit and research to influence standards of pain management and disseminate findings through presentation to professional groups.2 Contribute to the writing of protocols relevant to specialist pain management.3 Promote patient and public involvement activities in the specialist area, leading to service improvement4 Promote peoples equality, diversity and rights to shape appropriate service provision that is equitable and accessible. RISK MANAGEMENT It is a standard element of the role and responsibility of all staff of the Trust that they fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards. RECORDS MANAGEMENT/DATA PROTECTION ACTAs an employee of the Trust, you have a legal responsibility for all records (including patient health, financial, personal and administrative) that you gather or use as part of your work within the trust. The records may be paper, electronic, microfiche, audio or videotapes, x-ray images. You must consult your manager if you have any doubt as to the correct management of the records with which you work. HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTSAll employees of the Trust have a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Employees are required to co-operate with management to enable the Trust to meet its own legal duties and to report any circumstances that may compromise the health, safety and welfare of those affected by the Trust undertakings. CONFIDENTIALITY AND INFORMATION SECURITYAs a Trust employee you are required to uphold the confidentiality of all records held by the trust, whether patient records or trust information. This duty lasts indefinitely and will continue after you leave the trust employment. All Information which identifies individuals in whatever form (paper/pictures, electronic data/images or voice) is covered by the 1998 Data Protection Act and should be managed in accordance with this legislation. TRUST POLICIESThe Trust operates a range of policies, e.g. Human Resources, Clinical Practice (available on the Trust intranet). All Trust employees must observe and adhere to the provisions outlined in these policies.
