Summary
Radiopharmacology and Scientific Laboratory: Safely unpack and assay radiopharmaceuticals in compliance with safety protocols. Accurately prepare, dispense, and administer diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals and medications as prescribed by legislation and SOPs, maintaining aseptic techniques. Perform and analyse in-vitro laboratory procedures, ensuring all measurements are accurate and preparing results for reporting. Patient Management and Care: Collaborate with healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality patient care while upholding confidentiality and respect, in line with departmental and Trust policies. Take responsibility for preparing patients for imaging studies, ensuring that all procedures are thoroughly explained in a clear, understandable manner (with an interpreter if necessary). Confirm patient identification, obtain consent, and ensure all relevant details are documented. Health & Safety / Radiation Protection: Implement universal precautions when handling and disposing of unsealed radioactive materials, blood products, syringes, bodily fluids, and other hazardous materials, following departmental protocols and government regulations. In the event of a spill or accident, promptly localize, contain, and decontaminate the area to minimize the spread of radioactive or hazardous materials. Participate in daily radiation monitoring, regularly check sealed sources, and maintain a record of results. Report any adverse incidents or potential risks to the appropriate personnel, ensuring compliance with safety regulations in a secure working environment. Manual Handling: Safely use patient immobilization devices and supports as needed to ensure diagnostic accuracy during imaging studies. Safely transfer patients from beds or chairs to imaging tables using or without devices, in accordance with the Manual Handling policy. Clinical Audit and Quality Monitoring: Engage in clinical audit reviews and quality monitoring programs to ensure high standards of service. Perform quality assurance (QA) testing on diagnostic equipment to verify operational readiness, and conduct daily radiopharmacy QC testing on dose calibrators to ensure accurate radiopharmaceutical dosing. Report / Escalate equipment discrepancies or faults promptly and support troubleshooting efforts under the guidance of the immediate supervisor to enable quick remedial actions. Education, Training, and Staff Development: Provide patients with clear, accessible written and verbal information regarding their treatment in line with Departmental / Trust standards. Participate in the delivery of educational programs for clients, carers, and staff, adapting content to meet specific needs and implement changes accordingly. Support training programs for staff, identifying gaps in knowledge and tailoring education to improve Nuclear Medicine practices and patient care. Deliver lectures for university courses affiliated with Kings College Hospital and actively participate in educational events provided by the Trust and the primary care sector. Attend relevant meetings and conferences to stay informed about current issues within the Trust and the broader specialist services locally and nationally. Promote evidence-based practice. Participate in and support Trust-approved research projects within the department. Present lectures, seminars, and posters regularly and contribute to publications in relevant national journals or media outlets. Assist with the induction, training, and development of nuclear medicine technologists, students, and work experience placements. Continuously review and update protocols and incorporate new technologies to ensure the use of the latest evidence-based methodologies in patient procedures. Personal Professional Development: Achieve required clinical competencies for the role and stay current with literature and research in the specialty. Actively maintain professional development, attending mandatory study sessions and performance appraisals as required. Keep up to date with relevant EANM/BNMS guidelines and Trust protocols. Ensure registration with the Clinical Technologist body, if not already registered, and work towards obtaining a Masters degree or equivalent qualification. Collaborate with Education Practice Lead to ensure that development needs are met. Working Conditions: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding staff and patient records in compliance with Trust policies, understanding that unauthorized breaches may result in disciplinary action. Ensure that data protection standards are met according to the Data Protection Act. Perform any other duties as required by the role. Managerial Responsibilities: Liaise effectively with the Nuclear Medicine and other teams, ensuring smooth communication and collaboration. Be involved in audits and clinical service improvement projects. Ensure the optimal use of resources within the allocated budget. Escalating issues to senior technologists in regards to scheduling, booking patient appointments, and addressing patient inquiries, contributing to an efficient nuclear medicine service. Help organize the clinical worklist and assist in department operations in the absence of the technical services manager or senior technologists. Use patient information management systems (e.g., EPIC, Alliance RIS) to accurately record and track patient data and movements within the nuclear medicine department. Support monitoring and maintaining stock levels for laboratory supplies, escalating and reordering as necessary to maintain an efficient workflow. Assist with ordering and managing stocks of radiopharmaceuticals, kits, and ancillary supplies in a cost-effective manner. People Management and Performance Lead, coach and manage the performance of the team in line with good people management practices. Ensuring excellence is recognised and underperformance is addressed. Participate in regular performance appraisal meetings and ensure each member of the team has a clear set of objectives and development plans. Ensure the team is compliance with all statutory, mandatory training together with any professional training requirements, ensuring they are up to date and fully compliant. Manage team absences including sickness in line with Trust policy ensuring the appropriate return to work meetings occur, e-roster is updated and productivity is at keep to the highest possible level. Identify and fill any vacancies that arise within the team in line with the Trusts recruitment policy and process. Identify talent and support the internal talent management process in order attract and retain and succession plan for your people. Review skills mix at regular intervals in order to identify any potential opportunities to maximise resource utilisation / allocation, ensuring job descriptions are kept up to date. Ensure overall wellbeing of the team is maintained. Continuously support in improving the morale of the team and implementing a culture of zero-tolerance for bullying and harassment.
