Summary
Senior Medical Technologist (Respiratory Equipment) Band 6 (Annex 21 training pathway available) Job Purpose To provide specialist maintenance, repair, and technical support for respiratory and ventilation equipment at both system and component/circuit level. The postholder will ensure the safety, reliability, and effective operation of equipment used within hospital and community settings, directly supporting the care of patients dependent on life-support technology. Main Duties and Responsibilities Carry out routine servicing, fault-finding, and repair of respiratory and ventilation equipment, including electronic diagnosis and repair at component and circuit level. Ensure repaired equipment is safe and compliant with departmental test procedures and policies. Withdraw non-compliant equipment from service and report appropriately. Maintain test and calibration equipment. Participate in the on-call rota, providing 24/7 technical support. Manage and maintain Trust property, including vehicles, tools, test equipment, and mobile devices. Ensure safe handling and decontamination of contaminated equipment. Training and Education Provide technical instruction to patients, families, and carers during discharge, ensuring safe use of home equipment. Deliver training to multidisciplinary teams, nursing staff, and junior technologists. Contribute to departmental and Trust mandatory training programmes. Mentor trainee technologists, particularly those on the Annex 21 pathway and/or apprentice schemes. Research and Development Support the evaluation, assessment, and trial of new respiratory equipment and technologies in collaboration with medical and nursing staff. Contribute to innovation and service development projects within the Lane Fox Unit. Community and Patient Support Undertake home visits to install, maintain, and repair ventilatory equipment in patients homes. Ensure safe transport and handling of equipment. Provide technical advice and reassurance to patients and carers in the community. Service Context The Technical Services team supports: Lane Fox Respiratory Unit (14 beds, invasive and non-invasive ventilation). Satellite Weaning Unit at East Surrey Hospital (20 beds). Over 2,600 patients in the community who rely on long-term ventilation. Evelina London Childrens Hospital paediatric respiratory service. All services are underpinned by a 24/7 technical support rota, ensuring continuity of care. Organisational Chart Head of Technical Services Chief Medical Technologist Senior Medical Technologist Medical Technologist Requirements Degree in relevant subject (Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electronics, Medical Physics) or equivalent experience. Registration (or eligibility) with the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT). Must have full UK driving licence. Demonstrable experience in electronic servicing and repair at circuit level.
