Veolia is seeking a Senior Civil and Structural Design Engineer for their Technical Direction Engineering Team due to expansion in the energy sector. The role focuses on creating innovative, sustainable solutions whilst working with communities and contributing to an inclusive culture.


The position involves optimising civil and structural design for energy facilities, ensuring they deliver value, safety, and operational efficiency whilst meeting specifications, budgets, and legal requirements. The engineer will work on business projects valued up to £50 million, aligning technical solutions with overall business objectives. This is an opportunity to contribute to environmental sustainability and work on significant energy infrastructure projects.

What you'll be doing:

  • Collaborate with Technical Solutions to create efficient, safe, flexible, and buildable site concept layouts for energy projects.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and design assessments with the MEP team, supporting RIBA Stage 2 design.
  • Prepare technical and performance specifications for employer's requirements for external design contractors.
  • Support project development with civil and structural costing and programming.
  • Review and provide technical governance on detailed design, focusing on safety, performance, and value engineering.
  • Attend regular progress meetings during tender, design, and construction.
  • Serve as the specialist Civil and Structural Engineering resource throughout project development and delivery.

What we're looking for:

Essential Attributes

  • Degree-qualified Civil or Structural Design Engineer with a minimum of 10 years' relevant professional experience
  • Proven proficiency in designing civil and structural elements for energy installations across diverse facilities (commercial, industrial, NHS, district heating)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate efficient, innovative design solutions for complex projects, with strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Chartered status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Institute of Structural Engineers (IStructE)
  • Thorough knowledge and application of British and European design standards
  • Proficient in CAD and structural analysis software
  • Practical experience with site investigations, inspections, and buildability considerations
  • Sound understanding of common construction contracts (e.g., NEC3, FIDIC Red Book) and environmental legislation
  • Excellent collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal stakeholders and external contractors, building strong professional relationships
