Crynodeb

The School of Mathematical Sciences invites applications for a Research Fellow position in the field of theoretical high-energy physics. This is a 2-year position envisioned to start in October 2026 with an end date of the 30th September 2028, which is part of the project “Currents and crystals in magnetised fundamental matter” funded by a Leverhulme Research Grant under the project leader Andreas Schmitt.

Academic context

The successful applicant will join the Applied Mathematics Group, which provides a strong research environment in high-energy physics, gravity, string theory, and holography. Members include Nils Andersson, Leor Barack, Oscar Dias, Carsten Gundlach, Ian Hawke, Ian Jones, Carlos Lobo, Adam Pound, Andreas Schmitt, Kostas Skenderis. The Research Fellow will also be a member of the STAG Research Centre, which encompasses scientists from Maths and Physics at the interface of string theory, quantum field theory, gravity and astrophysics.

Applicants’ profile

Applicants should have a track record of theoretical research in Quantum Chromodynamics or related areas. The project aims at the study of phases at nonzero baryon densities and their applications to the physics of neutron stars, in particular anisotropic phases in a magnetic field. Experience in applications of the gauge-gravity duality is desirable, but not necessary.

The successful applicant should have a PhD (or be close to completing a PhD) in physics or a related discipline, or an equivalent qualification.

EDI and working environment

The School of Mathematical Sciences is committed to promoting equality and diversity, and holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award demonstrating this commitment. We welcome applicants from all sections of the community, regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation, and will give due consideration to applicants seeking flexible working patterns and to those who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy and onsite childcare facilities, and offers a range of benefits designed to help maintain and support employees' well-being and work-life balance. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and being a globally responsible university and has been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcome applicants who support our mission of inclusivity.
