Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Youth Worker to join the team at Abingdon DAMASCUS Youth Project (Registered Charity 1098966). As Youth Worker, you will be expected to use outreach and detached youth work methods, working in various locations within the DAMASCUS community, 30 – 37 Hours per week.

Being supportive and young-people-focused, as Youth Worker you will build trusting relationships and empower young people to make positive life choices, keeping the welfare and safeguarding of young people at the heart of your work.

Working alongside our Senior Youth Worker, you will focus part of your time on the intergenerational aspects of our work within the community. Intergenerational work involves focusing on improving integration between young people and older generations within the community.

Main duties include:
• Streets-based work: making contact with young people where they feel comfortable e.g. on streets and in informal meeting places.

• Centre-based work: running weekly drop-in sessions, providing a place where young people can feel comfortable to chat, discuss a concern or join an activity.

• Workshops and 1-2-1s: Listening to young people, proactively responding to needs by planning and running workshops on issues such as sexual health, drugs, racism. Identifying and working with those who may benefit from 1-2-1 support.

• Community-based work: facilitating young people’s involvement in events such as village fetes, litter picks, doorstep bingo etc. promoting understanding and support amongst different generations within the community.

Previous relevant experience in youth and community work or similar, e.g. child social work or education, is essential. Suitable applicants will thrive from the chance to make a difference – be that big or small - in the lives of young people and their community.

As you will be engaging with young people within their community (typically Monday - Thursday c.11:30/12:00pm until 8:30 p.m. but schedule depending upon requirement), working evenings, weekends and during school holidays is required.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all volunteers and staff to share this commitment and undergo appropriate checks (including Rehabilitation of Offenders Declaration and Enhanced DBS check), provide referee details and undergo appropriate training.

Salary up to 28,000 depending upon experience.

*DAMASCUS Youth Project is also supported, locally, by the Parish Councils of Drayton, Milton, Sutton Courtenay, Steventon and Abingdon Town Council, the areas in which we operate.
