Job Overview:
To lead and supervise mechanical works on construction, installation, and refurbishment projects within the water and wastewater industry. The Mechanical Site Supervisor will oversee site teams, coordinate resources, ensure compliance with WIMES (Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications), client specifications, and health and safety standards, while delivering projects safely, on time, and to quality requirements.
Job Responsibilities
• Supervise and coordinate mechanical site teams, subcontractors, and resources.
• Plan and oversee installation, maintenance, and commissioning of mechanical systems.
• Manage and monitor pipework installation across multiple materials and sizes, including:
o Ductile Iron, Stainless Steel, Carbon Steel, UPVC, and ABS.
o Diameters from 25mm to 1200mm.
• Ensure works are delivered in line with WIMES standards and client specifications.
• Conduct site inspections, toolbox talks, and daily briefings to maintain safety and productivity.
• Oversee compliance with method statements, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
• Provide first-line supervision for health, safety, and quality on site.
• Support testing, commissioning, and handover of mechanical systems.
• Liaise with project managers, engineers, and client representatives to ensure smooth project delivery.
• Maintain accurate site records, progress reports, and quality documentation.
No role profile can cover every issue which may arise within the post at various times. The post holder is expected to carry out other duties from time to time, which are broadly consistent with those described.

Knowledge and Skills required
Mechanical Supervisor requires strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and a thorough understanding of safety and regulatory requirements to manage mechanical works effectively and ensure the reliable operation of water and wastewater assets.
Technical & Industry Knowledge
• Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including pumps, motors, gearboxes, valves, pipework, and rotating equipment.
• Strong understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes and associated mechanical plant.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and maintenance documentation.
• Knowledge of asset management, maintenance strategies, commissioning processes, and fault diagnosis.
• Familiarity with industry standards, company procedures, and statutory regulations relevant to the water industry.
Supervisory & Leadership Skills
• Proven ability to supervise, coordinate, and mentor mechanical fitters, technicians, and contractors on site.
• Experience planning and allocating work, managing resources, and ensuring tasks are completed safely, on time, and to specification.
• Ability to lead site activities, toolbox talks, and daily briefings.
• Strong decision-making skills to manage operational priorities and respond to breakdowns and emergencies.
Health, Safety & Compliance
• In-depth knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation, including permit-to-work systems, confined spaces, lifting operations, and lock-out/tag-out.
• Competence in producing and reviewing risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
• Commitment to promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring compliance with safe systems of work.
Quality, Reporting & Communication
• Ability to monitor quality of workmanship and ensure adherence to technical and safety standards.
• Strong communication skills to liaise with operations teams, engineers, project managers, and external contractors.
• Competence in completing site records, progress reports, maintenance documentation, and compliance paperwork.
Problem-Solving & Personal Attributes
• Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills with a proactive approach to minimising downtime.
• Ability to work under pressure in operational environments and manage multiple workstreams.
• Organised, accountable, and safety-focused, with a continuous improvement mindset.
Experience required
5 Years + in the water industry
Essential Qualifications
• Recognised Mechanical Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent qualification.
• Proven supervisory experience in the water industry or heavy industrial projects.
• Strong knowledge of pumps, valves, rotating equipment, and mechanical systems.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Gold CSCS Card (Supervisor level).
• SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme).
• Valid First Aid certification.
Desirable Qualifications
• EUSR Water Hygiene card.
• Confined space training.
• SMSTS or equivalent site supervisory training.
• Experience with welding, hot works, and advanced pipefitting techniques.
• Knowledge of condition monitoring techniques (e.g., vibration analysis, laser alignment).
• Familiarity with client-specific specifications and WIMES compliance.
