Crynodeb

West Northamptonshire is a place of ambition and opportunity with a strong focus on working with our many different communities. At the heart of our vision to make West Northants a great place to live, work, visit and thrive, is a clear commitment to improving health, preventing ill-health and reducing inequalities.

Our Public Health Team is currently undertaking an exciting and purposeful redesign of portfolios to better align resources to priorities and strengthen our impact on local communities. As part of this, we are seeking two exceptional Consultants in Public Health to play a key role in shaping and delivering our public health agenda.

These are senior leadership roles with real scope to influence strategy, shape portfolios, lead programmes and work across the system. You will work closely with the Director of Public Health and senior colleagues across the Council, the NHS, the Integrated Care System and the voluntary and community sector to deliver meaningful, prevention-focused change.

These two roles will span different portfolio areas, with final responsibilities shaped through the ongoing redesign. For an informal discussion about the opportunities and direction of travel, please contact David.Johns@westnorthants.gov.uk (Director of Public Health).

Our benefits

What will you be doing?

As a Consultant in Public Health at West Northamptonshire Council, you will provide strategic and system leadership to improve population health and reduce inequalities. You will lead and influence work across public health domains, using evidence and insight to shape policy, commissioning and service design, and working collaboratively across the Council, the NHS, the Integrated Care System and the voluntary and community sector.

You will lead and support services and teams with kindness and purpose, fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture grounded in shared goals. You will operate confidently within a political environment, offering clear and balanced public health advice to senior leaders and elected members, and champion prevention, early intervention and approaches that help people and communities to thrive.

Why West Northamptonshire?

West Northamptonshire Council has previously been through Local Government Reform and is therefore still a relatively new authority. Alongside a new Director of Public Health, there is an opportunity to think innovatively and do things differently.

You’ll join a passionate and supportive Public Health team focused on doing the best for our communities, listening and responding to their needs.

You’ll also join a Council that values professional expertise, collaboration and leadership; and a public health leadership team where your voice will be heard, your judgement respected and your contribution visible.

About you

We’re looking for thoughtful, value-driven public health leaders with passion and energy. You don’t need to have all the answers, but you do need a clear commitment to prevention and reducing health inequalities. If you bring emotional intelligence, political awareness and a genuine desire to improve people’s lives, we’d be keen to hear from you.

Interviews are expected to take place in the w/c 9th February 2026.
