Summary
Overview
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Garage/Workshop Manager to oversee the daily operations of our busy automotive repair garage. Our customers include walk-in clients, regular customers, and motor traders. The ideal candidate will ensure smooth workflow, efficient job allocation, strong communication between staff, and high-quality customer service.
Key Responsibilities
1. Daily Workshop Operations
* Oversee and coordinate all daily repair jobs and MOT-related work.
* Create and manage the daily job lineup for mechanics.
* Ensure vehicles are moved through the workshop efficiently—repairs completed on time, next cars brought in promptly.
* Monitor workflow to avoid delays, bottlenecks, or downtime.
* Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment.
2. Staff Coordination & Support
* Act as the link between mechanics, MOT testers, and the office manager.
* Assist mechanics with technical questions or job clarifications.
* Make sure MOT testers and mechanics communicate effectively regarding vehicle status, failures, retests, and timeframes.
* Motivate the team and maintain a positive working environment.
3. Customer Communication
* Communicate with customers when needed regarding job updates, extra work approval, and completion times.
* Ensure customer expectations are met with honesty, professionalism, and clarity.
4. Job Quality & Efficiency
* Ensure repairs, servicing, clutches, diagnostics, and all other mechanical work are completed to a high standard.
* Prioritise urgent jobs (e.g., early MOT failures, safety-related work).
* Perform quality checks on completed repairs when necessary.
5. Supplier & Parts Management
* Work with suppliers to order parts promptly and cost-effectively.
* Monitor daily parts expenditure and report to the Business Manager.
* Ensure parts arrive on time to keep jobs moving without delays.
6. Reporting & Administration
* Report daily progress, completed jobs, delays, and workshop status to the Business Manager.
* Maintain job cards, timesheets, and workshop records accurately.
Skills & Experience Required
* Strong mechanical background (qualified mechanic preferred).
* Prior experience as a workshop controller, garage manager, or senior mechanic.
* Excellent communication and leadership skills.
* Ability to multitask, prioritise and manage a busy workshop environment.
* Strong problem-solving abilities.
* Good understanding of MOT processes and related repair requirements.
* Ability to work under pressure while maintaining high standards.
