Crynodeb

Clinical Co-ordinating the care of patients diagnosed with urological cancer to ensure prompt treatment in line with national access standards of 18 weeks and cancer targets. Participating in the weekly multidisciplinary team meetings and working with the urology team to help co-ordinate the patients pathway, informing the patients GPs of decisions made and informing patient when a cancer diagnosis has been ruled out. Undertake screening of referrals to ensure efficient use of clinic time and minimisation of wasted clinic slots Undertaking intra-vesical chemotherapy and immunotherapy for superficial bladder cancers and then arranging appropriate follow up according to evidence based protocols. Undertake bladder instillations for benign disease, trial without catheters and complex catheter changes After appropriate training, requesting diagnostic investigations like blood tests and endoscopic examinations. Prepare patients for procedures over the telephone, ensuring they are suitably prepared for out-patient procedures. Offer advice on the wards in relation to urology nursing care/continence issues Leadership/Networking Providing assistance to all staff to enhance patient care. Engaging in effective communication, involving all members of the multidisciplinary team. Fostering the continued development of the urology service within the Trust. Working across care settings to achieve optimum continuity of care of patients with catheters and urological disease providing advice to ward staff and community staff. Acting as an effective role model. Involvement with urology nurses within the Royal Marsden Partners to share learning and identify best practice. To be familiar with national, professional and local quality issues relevant to the delivery of nursing services, e.g. Clinical Governance, National Peer Review. Service Development Keeping own knowledge up to date and taking personal responsibility for self- development and personal growth. Identify own personal development needs as part of annual appraisal process. Establish and maintain personal clinical supervision and mentoring. Ensure all communication is presented appropriately to the different recipients, according to levels of understanding, type of communication being imparted and possible barriers such as language, culture, understanding or physical or mental health conditions.
