Premises Assistant - Immediate Start

£12.21-£16.00 per hour (depending on experience)
Full‑time, Long‑term Role
Small Heath - Birmingham
DBS on the Update Service is Essential

A busy and welcoming educational setting is seeking a reliable and proactive Premises Assistant to join the site team as soon as possible. This is a hands‑on role supporting the smooth running, safety, and maintenance of the school buildings and grounds. You will work closely with the Premises Manager to ensure the site remains safe, secure, clean, and fully operational at all times.

Key Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Security
- Support the Premises Manager to ensure full compliance with Health & Safety legislation and site procedures.
- Act as a first aider (training can be provided).
- Act as a trained minibus driver when required.
- Assist in ensuring full site cover across all opening hours, including occasional evenings or weekends.
- Support the general security of buildings and grounds, including locking/unlocking and alarm response.
- Help maintain and update risk assessments and management plans.
- Carry out routine site inspections and record findings using the building management system.
- Identify, report, and make safe any hazards on site.
- Follow fire safety procedures and support evacuation processes.

Buildings & Grounds Maintenance
- Ensure all plant, machinery, and equipment are operational during opening hours and adjusted for evening/weekend use.
- Undertake general site maintenance, grounds work, and minor repairs to a high standard.
- Ensure refuse is collected and disposed of promptly and in line with legislation.
- Deliver goods and equipment around the site as required.
- Carry out in‑house remedial works and escalate issues requiring contractors.
- Work collaboratively with the cleaning team to ensure all areas are clean, safe, and ready for use.

Lettings (where required)
- Oversee evening lettings, ensuring rooms are set up appropriately and the premises are checked before and after use.
- Take responsibility for the safety of hirers while on site.
- Open and secure the premises following agreed procedures.
- Undertake basic reception duties such as answering calls, greeting visitors, and ensuring DBS requirements are met.

Other Duties
- Promote the safety and welfare of children and young people at all times.
- Communicate professionally with colleagues, visitors, and external contractors.
- Carry out any other reasonable tasks as directed by the Premises Manager.

Person Specification

Qualifications
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English - Grade C or above.
- First aid qualification (desirable).
- Minibus training (desirable).
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Health & Safety qualifications or willingness to undertake training.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Experience in building or site maintenance, ideally within an educational setting.
- Understanding of Health & Safety, fire safety, and manual handling regulations.
- Ability to monitor contractors and cleaning staff.
- Basic IT skills for record‑keeping and administrative tasks.
- Practical skills in plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, painting, or similar trades (desirable).
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role.
