Summary

The Internal Communications and Engagement Officer will support the delivery of effective internal communications and staff engagement across the London Borough of Islington. Working within the Communications and Campaigns service, the post holder will help ensure employees are informed, engaged, and aligned with the council’s priorities, values, and strategic objectives.

The role involves planning, delivering, and evaluating internal communications activity using a range of channels, including intranet, email, internal social media, digital content, printed materials, events, and face-to-face engagement. The post holder will produce clear, accurate, and engaging content tailored to different internal audiences and contribute ideas and content for campaigns and staff engagement initiatives.

The officer will work closely with senior officers, service leads, and colleagues across the council to provide communications advice and ensure messages are coordinated, timely, and consistent with the council’s brand and objectives. The role requires strong organisational skills, the ability to manage multiple pieces of work at the same time, and confidence working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

The post holder will support staff engagement and organisational change activity, using insight, data, and feedback to improve the effectiveness of communications. They will ensure all communications are culturally competent, inclusive, and reflective of the council’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

The role includes commissioning and coordinating design or print work where required, contributing to digital content such as videos or graphics, and supporting the wider objectives of the communications service. The post holder will attend relevant meetings, maintain accurate records, and ensure compliance with GDPR, information governance, and health and safety requirements.

The Internal Communications and Engagement Officer will report to the Internal Communications and Engagement Manager and may oversee contractors or apprentices as required. Experience in internal communications, strong written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a large organisation are essential. Experience in a local authority or public sector environment and supporting staff engagement or change programmes is desirable. Flexible working arrangements apply.
