Crynodeb
We are looking for a part time Locum Consultant to join the Department at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This will cover 0.5 WTE and will be for 6 months. The post has been created to meet the rapidly increasing demand for clinical services in Adult Allergy.
The Allergy service is well established and has been providing clinical care since 1979. This is a regional service and serves a population of approximately 1.8 million people. The service is Specialised Commissioned for both Adult Allergy and Immunology.
The successful candidate must be on the specialist register (Allergy) of the GMC or be eligible to be on the specialist register within six months of the date of the Appointments Advisory Committee.
The appointee must have completed the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (PMETB)-approved Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB) curriculum in Allergy or demonstrate (to PMETB or an Appointments Advisory Committee) evidence of equivalence in knowledge, training and experience of Allergy and the care of patients with allergic disorders and must hold the MRCP (UK) or show evidence of equivalent training and experience.
The Adult Clinical Allergy services currently provided by the Allergy and Clinical Immunology department are based at the Royal Preston Hospital, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Clinical:
The consultant will be expected to help in the Department’s effort towards gaining Accreditation for the Adult Allergy service. Referrals will be from both primary and secondary care and will be conducted by regular out-patient clinic. The consultant will be supported by outpatient band 5 nurses, specialist nurses trained in Allergy and Immunology and dedicated secretaries.
Management and Administration:
The post holder will be asked to undertake appropriate administrative responsibilities within the department and Trusts as agreed with the Specialty Lead and Clinical Director of Pathology / Allergy & Clinical Immunology. The post holder will be expected to cover other consultant staff when on annual and study leave. The newly appointed consultant will have provision made for mentoring in the first year.
Training:
Modern Education Centres are based at both Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital sites and offer excellent library and study facilities, including PC/Internet support for staff and students as well as high tech simulation facilities.
Research and Development:
The consultant will be expected to participate in research and development and assist in the supervision of projects undertaken by junior medical staff.
Supporting Professional Activities:
The consultant will be expected to participate in medical audit and continuing professional development (CPD) and to maintain an adequate CPD portfolio.
Allergy services
The department provides a Tier 3 allergy Regional Services to the Lancashire and South Cumbria zone of the North West Region. A comprehensive service in allergy for adults is provided. Most patients are seen as out-patients or day cases. Approximately 1,600 new allergy patients are seen per annum.
We provide a service for the diagnosis and management of a wide range of allergic disorders, including:
· Hay fever
· Perennial rhinitis; allergic or non-allergic
· Urticaria and angioedema
· Anaphylaxis
· Food allergy (all types including peanut and nut allergy)
· Drug allergy, including allergy to antibiotics, NSAIDs and local anaesthetics and suspected anaphylaxis during anaesthesia
· Bee and wasp venom allergy
· Latex allergy
· Mastocytosis
Skin tests and specific IgE tests are performed.
There is a dedicated immunotherapy clinic which is nurse led with Consultant supervision.
Subcutaneous immunotherapy treatment is available for a range of allergens including insect venoms and aeroallergens.
There are also dedicated food challenge and drug testing/challenge clinics.
There is also a nurse led Omalizumab injection clinic.
