Clinical Responsibilities 1. Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team that includes orthopaedic consultants, physiotherapists, orthotists, engineers, administrative staff and other professional disciplines. 2. Have direct contact with patients, including children, with severe mobility disabilities and accompanying communication and learning difficulties. Some patients will have little or no verbal communication skills. Parents and carers may be having difficulty coming to terms with their childs conditions, physical abilities or prognosis. 3. Set up, adjust and customise equipment and showing due regard to patient safety and ease of use. 4. Record patient use of assistive technologies using video cameras and store images securely on the ORLAU server. 5. Maintain records of work undertaken for inclusion in patient notes and to comply with the ORLAU Quality Management System to ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and other management requirements. 6. Plan own work schedule to ensure that equipment for patient supply is prepared beforehand in a timely manner in accordance with the clinical diary. Technical Responsibilities 7. Undertake a wide range of manufacturing tasks to customary levels of engineering precision. These include machining (turning and milling), fitting, welding (mainly TIG) and fabrication and will require competence in working with such materials as ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, foam materials, wood, leather and other fabrics, paints and adhesives. 8. Manufacture, assemble, adjust, modify, service and maintain highly specialist equipment for use by patients with physical disabilities. 9. Assist with the receipt, repair and dispatch of externally manufactured assistive technology devices (eg from the Department of Orthotics Manufacturing or external suppliers) 10. Maintain high engineering standards and appropriate levels of precision in order to ensure quality of product. 11. Execute programmes of servicing and preventative maintenance of workshop tools and plant. Identify and manage necessary repair work (in-house or sub-contract) to workshop plant and equipment. Calibrate precision workshop measuring instruments (e.g. micrometers). Research and Development 12. Contribute to ORLAUs research and development activities by participating in group discussions, suggesting new developments in patient equipment and manufacturing components for prototype designs under the supervision of senior colleagues. Management/Organisational Responsibilities 13. Organise own workload, with support from senior colleagues, to ensure completion dates agreed with patients and staff are met. 14. Monitor levels of stock items such as medical device consumables, raw materials, tooling and other goods and request purchase by others as necessary in a timely manner Education and Training 15. Participate in training courses to build skills, as specified by the senior engineering staff and technicians.
