Summary
Shared Lives brings people together to share homes, lives, and community connections, so everyone has the chance to live where they feel they belong and live life their way.
Shared Lives carers open their homes and lives to people who need support, for example with a learning disability and/or dementia. You can offer support on a long term, live in basis, or you can offer short break, overnight or for a few days at a time. It’s similar to fostering, but for adults with more independence. To make a difference, all you need is a spare room at home.
To offer support during the day, you don’t need a spare room! The hours per day are dependent on people’s needs. They can be anytime from 8am-10pm, and are around four ours in total. During this time, you will support the person in your own home or in the community doing things you both enjoy, such as theatre and cinema trips and attending community groups or events, or attending health appointments with them. It can be done as and when you want.
You will provide a level of care and support to your individual to meet their needs and support them to live as independently as possible within your home. We carefully match you with a supported person based on shared values and interests, so they become involved in your everyday life, as you proactively become involved in theirs.
Shared Lives carers are self-employed and can take advantage of generous tax breaks, so most of your income is not taxed. You will work fully from home, and this can be done flexibly around other commitments when offering short breaks or day support. We offer you full training and support every step of the way.
During the assessment stage, we will assess your values, behaviours and general suitability for the role. This takes around three months and our friendly team are there to support and guide you through this.
We welcome applicants of any age, people in families, single people, people from ethnic minorities and our LGBTQ communities. We are a diverse family here at Shared Lives Stoke and that’s what brings the magic.
