An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist team within the Haematology at Leighton service. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic registered nurse with at least 4 years relevant experience to join the Christie at Leighton Haematology service. The post holder will provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients and families and will coordinate patient care and act as a ‘key worker’ for a nurse-led patient service. The post holder will be working in conjunction with other haematology nurse specialists, advanced clinical practitioners, Consultants and a wide range of administrative staff.

Provide specialist nursing support in haematology clinics and holistic needs assessments.

Provide nurse led clinics including patient stratified follow-up

Work with the haematology nursing team and be a ‘key worker’ for patients and their families

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide evidence based individualised patient care according to patients changing healthcare needs, through electronic holistic needs assessment.
• Participate in the clinical management of patients and formulate clinical management plans as per medical instruction and patient agreement.
• Act as a `Keyworker` for a clinical case load and facilitate the co-ordination of patient care.
• Support the haematology team to assess patient`s information needs and provide relevant information to meet those needs, ensuring the focus is on the promotion of health as well as illness.
• Accept and make appropriate referrals to multi- professional disciplinary team and take action if clinically indicated.
• Communicate complex, sensitive, or contentious information to patients and carers, which may include results and management options. Ensure patients receive appropriate information and support in relation to their illness and treatment.
• Contribute to the collection of quantitative and qualitative data, utilising this data by providing written reports when required which provide evidence of productivity, outcomes, and quality.
• Actively integrate research, theory, and practice by undertaking surveys or audits, as necessary.
• Participate in the development of trust policy and clinical guidelines within haematology.
• Practice evidence-based healthcare and be responsible for developing clinical policies within the Christie @ Leighton Service
• Assess patient`s adverse events to therapy to enable appropriate management and symptom control.
• Develop skills in advanced communication for all aspects of patient assessment, care, and support.
• Provide a telephone clinic for MPN/MGUS/CLL & electronic HNA.
• Actively participates in multi- professional meetings, acting as the patient advocate and representing nursing views.
• Demonstrates the agreed set of values and accountable for own attitude and behaviour

Management Responsibilities:
• Provide a supportive working environment and maintenance of staff morale, promoting a culture in which members of the team feel valued and able to achieve their potential.
• Actively participate in clinical risk assessments and ensure correct reporting of clinical incidents in accordance with hospital policy.
• Supports a culture that facilitates patient centred care and patient empowerment.
• Supports the development and promotion of the specialist nursing service ensuring the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care.
• Engages patient and public involvement within the sphere of practice.
• Contribute to wider issues in the Trust such as committee membership and policy development.
• Participate in nursing and clinical developments within the Trust.
• To provide written evidence of service development and performance.
• Maintain accurate clinical records relating to nursing.
• Participate in haematology advisory boards and relevant working groups.

Professional Responsibilities:
• Participate in a structured orientation programme in order to achieve full competency within the role.
• Work within professional codes and policies laid down both nationally and by the Trust.
• Participate in clinical supervision as a supervisor and where appropriate a supervisee.
• Contribute to the development of nurse led care and non-medical prescribing within regional and national level.
• Provide leadership for regional nursing forum in the haematology arena.

• Take responsibility for life- long learning and personal development through clinical supervision, appraisal and actively engage with learning development opportunities.
• Contribute to the development and dissemination of new knowledge by submitting papers for publication and / or abstracts for haematology conferences.
• Contribute to the identification of service goals and appreciates how these links with performance targets and quality indicators.
• Ensure the provision of care is in accordance with The Christie NHS Trust policy and procedures guidelines.
• Promote patient centred services for patients affected by cancer and work in collaboration with allied health professionals in the trust and in the community.
• Promote equality and value diversity.
