Summary

SR141 Commissioning Engineer - Protection & Control

Location: Stone Head Office & UK Client Sites

About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven SR141 Authorised Commissioning Engineer to join our Energy Business. You will be responsible for testing and commissioning Electrical Protection & Control systems, ranging from modifications of existing systems to full replacement and new-build installations.

This role is suited to experienced National Grid SR141-authorised Commissioning Engineers who are confident working within HV substation environments. The position will be based between our Stone Head Office and client sites across the UK.

You will play a key role in leading commissioning activities, working closely with customers, project managers and site teams, and contributing to the development of commissioning documentation and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and carry out site acceptance testing and commissioning of Protection & Control systems within HV substations, in line with approved documentation, procedures and SR141 authorisation

  • Perform functional and performance testing of protection relays, control systems, control panels and associated secondary equipment

  • Witness and support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) activities

  • Ensure all installation, testing and commissioning works comply with agreed technical procedures, standards and National Grid requirements

  • Attend and contribute to National Grid SR106 Commissioning Panel meetings

  • Produce, collate and manage the project commissioning file

  • Control, update and mark up drawings and schematics as required during commissioning

  • Develop and review commissioning documentation including Commissioning Switching Programmes, Method Statements, test reports, certificates and handover records

  • Deploy and verify configuration and setting files to SCADA BCUs, RTUs, protection relays and network devices

  • Define required site equipment, materials, spares and test equipment for commissioning activities

  • Manage Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) and permit systems in line with safe working procedures

  • Identify, investigate and resolve technical issues and faults during commissioning and energisation

  • Liaise with project managers, site teams, clients and other stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery

  • Provide visible safety leadership, promoting best practice in health, safety and environmental performance

Candidate Profile

Essential Requirements:

  • Qualified or highly experienced in an Electrical Engineering discipline

  • Current or previous National Grid SR141 (BP141 / TP141) authorisation

  • Extensive experience commissioning HV substations (132kV-400kV)

  • Strong knowledge of Protection & Control systems, control schemes and grid infrastructure

  • Understanding of communication protocols including IEC 61850, GOOSE, and associated media (fibre optic, Ethernet, serial)

  • Experience writing and contributing to test and commissioning specifications and plans

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and configuration file deployment to electrical devices

  • Experience working with SCADA systems

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

  • Structured, analytical approach to work

  • Ability to lead commissioning activities and work effectively under pressure

  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel
