Full Time

Required for April 2026

The governors of St Oswald’s Catholic Primary School are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational practising Catholic Deputy Headteacher who will develop and share our vision of high-quality education for all, with a deep commitment to our mission statement:

Love Jesus, Love Learning, Love Each Other

We are looking for a leader with exceptionally strong values who will foster and develop the respectful and inclusive ethos of our Catholic School. Who will bring energy and drive, demonstrating excellence in classroom practice and will be inspirational in enabling progress and raising standards. They must be creative, forward thinking and skilled in leading and managing areas of school improvement. The successful candidate must be able to face challenge with positivity, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be a team worker and essentially have a good sense of humour.

Governors are looking for a candidate with a passion for promoting a clear child centred vision of educational excellence, developing children’s’ love of learning whilst ensuring high levels of progress and attainment.

St Oswald’s Primary School is an average sized primary school. We can offer a prospective Deputy Head a school that in our most recent inspection in November 2022 deemed us to still be a ‘Good’ school (Ofsted) and in our CSI Inspection in October 2025 found us to be a ‘Good’ school but ‘Outstanding’ in areas of Leadership and Management and Catholic Life and Mission.

We have happy, well-behaved children who love their school and enjoy learning, extremely hard working, friendly staff who are dedicated to supporting development. We have a close working partnership between school, parents/carers, community and church and a governing body who is fully committed to continuing the development of this fantastic school.

The Deputy Headteacher will:

  • Be accountable to the Headteacher.
  • Be a member of the senior management team.
  • Be part of the Safeguarding Team.
  • Assist the headteacher in managing the school.
  • Support and represent the headteacher at meetings as and when required.
  • Undertake such duties as are delegated by the headteacher.

Play a major role, under the overall direction of the headteacher in formulating and reviewing the Mission Statement, Development Plan, overall aims and objectives of the school by helping establish the policies through which they shall be achieved, managing staff and resources to that end and monitoring progress towards their achievement.

Contribute to the efficient organisation, management and supervision of school routines.

If the headteacher is absent from the school, the deputy headteacher must undertake such duties of the headteacher as the headteacher or the governing body shall require.

We strongly recommend visits to school. Please contact the Business Manager, Mrs Crompton on enquiries@admin.saintoswalds.wigan.sch.uk or alternatively on 01942 724820.
