The Children and Young People's Day Unit are looking for a highly motivated Junior Sister to join the team. The ideal candidate will have experience as a Band 6 Staff Nurse with a background of SACT administration experience, Intrathecal and Recovery competency, although other backgrounds will be considered.

Our busy CYP Day Care and Outpatients sees over 6000 thousand patients a year, requiring systemic anti-cancer therapy, radiotherapy, procedures under general anaesthesia, and supportive care, delivered by our team. In addition to this, there is a TYA Day Care Bay with 4 chairs which are used provide SACT and supportive care. The age range of our patients is 1 to 24 years old, making CYPDU a unique unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team including paediatric shared care services, community services and district nurses and general practitioners to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.

To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long-term goals or plans.

To participate fully in the day-to-day organization and running of Children Young People’s Day Unit /Outpatient/McElwain Ward and Teenage Cancer Unit (CYPDU/OP, TCT, MCE) including the participation and oversight of the e-scheduling, outpatient, admissions and community appointments to ensure a smooth patient’s pathway.

To complete the first level assessment of CYP patients with cancer and their families to gain an understanding of their physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that these needs are met. This will include:

• Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
• Educating patients on their treatment such as indications and side effects.
• Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.
• To plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge / transfer discussing this with the patient, their family and multi-disciplinary teams and to alert the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes. To set goals for each of the identified nursing issues and encourage / teach other nursing staff to do the same. To help the patient achieve set goals through care planning.
