Applications are invited Core trainee in Paediatric Surgery/urology in Oxford, commencing ASAP for12 months with a possibility of extension. The paediatric surgical department is the tertiary referral unit for a catchment area of approx. 3 million and serves the local area of Oxfordshire. The successful candidate will take part in the junior doctor on call rota (1:8, full shift) and is expected to work in outpatient clinics and theatre. This post is not recognised for training but the post holder will be able to receive the same training as other CTs in the department. There will be good opportunities for audit and the opportunity to produce clinical papers.

. DUTIES OF THE POST


1. a) Principal Responsibilities



Clinical:

Principle responsibilities of the post holder are to work with the registrars and consultants in the day-to-day management of inpatients, outpatients, and to perform administrative duties e.g. discharge summaries, clinic letter, arranging admissions and surgical procedures. The post holder is expected to take part in clinical audit.





Research:

The post holder will be able to declare an interest in performing research in laparoscopic surgery, paediatric surgical oncology or paediatric urology. If this is the case time will be allocated to undertake research.






1. b) Daily Commitment



Clinical allocations can be daytime on call, theatre or clinics.

On call: full shift system

The timetable has to be flexible enough to allow short term changes to cover clinical commitments as required.



. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

The Department of Paediatric Surgery provides a comprehensive service for children up to 16 years of age for Oxfordshire and is a tertiary referral service for a catchment area of 3 million from Winchester to Kettering, Milton Keynes to Cheltenham for paediatric surgery and paediatric urology.

In the John Radcliffe Hospital there is a 20 bed surgical ward which is shared with orthopaedic surgery. We work closely with neonatal and paediatric intensive care units and high dependency units. A regional Neonatal Surgical Service for the Oxford Region is delivered and currently approximately 200 neonatal surgical emergencies are treated each year. There are close links between paediatric surgery and both, other surgical specialties and paediatric subspecialties including gastro-enterology, oncology, cardiology, neurology and fetal medicine.

Department has 8 middle grade registrars.

There are 6 foundation doctors and two CT posts with training opportunities in acute and elective complex paediatric surgery and paediatric urology.
1. c)Job Summary (clinical/ administrative)



All junior doctors are fully supervised and supported at all times. They are expected to:


• Participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care
• Supervise junior doctor’s ward work (including discharge letters)
• Conduct routine hand over ward rounds at 7.45am every morning & working ward rounds there-after as well as hand over to the on-call team every evening
• Organize and attend theatre lists in discussion with the registrars and consultants
• Attend outpatient clinics & dictate clinic letters
• Be responsible for patient transfers to other hospitals - they must give appropriate & relevant advice to assist in the patient transfer
• Take calls from GPs / other hospitals who wish to refer patients
• Take initiative to improve continuity & maintain patient care
• Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training





The on-call is 1 in 8 with prospective cover. The rota is EWTD compliant.
