Your new company
As the sole agency supplier to the HM Prison Service for the provision of maintenance trades and support operatives. Hays is seeking to recruit a General Building Operative for HMP Humber near Brough. This is an exciting opportunity to work within the prison service and can often lead to permanent opportunities.

Your new role

  • Work collaboratively as part of a team to deliver general maintenance tasks and assist tradespeople on-site.
  • Provide professional support services, including escorting contractors when required.
  • Carry out a range of DIY activities such as decorating, installing notice boards, assembling furniture, and repairing items within the prison.
  • Inspect appliances, fittings, and the overall environment to ensure they are in good working order, reporting any defects to the Team Leader.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, including litter picking and landscaping around the grounds when necessary.
  • Undertake additional facilities management duties as directed by the team manager.
  • Contribute to local and business-wide zero-carbon initiatives, supporting strategic and efficient approaches to sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards across all activities within the contract.


What you'll need to succeedPrevious experience in a prison/ public sector is not required for this role. The nature of the role requires candidates to be security conscious and able to challenge potential compromises and risks. You will also need to be reliable and consistent, level-headed and have exceptional interpersonal skills. Full training for working within a prison is provided by the establishment/ department.
You must be able to pass a full prison security clearance and enhanced DBS (if required) (Hays and the MOJ are responsible for organising all security clearances and DBS') You must hold a valid passport or Full Birth Certificate & Photo Driving Licence at your current address.
You must have proof of National Insurance AND proof of address dated in the past 3 months. All applicants must be able to provide details of at least 2 satisfactory employment references.
