5.Communication a)Communicate in an effective, clear, concise manner as a core member of the cardiothoracic surgical team, providing and receiving complex and/or contentious information to ensure a positive patient outcome. b)Communicate in a proactive manner, particularly in emergency and stressful situations. c)Relay sensitive information to members of the surgical team and other staff groups to ensure appropriate continuation of care for the patient. d)Discuss with clinicians within and outside immediate surgical team an appropriate care pathway for patients. This is particularly important for patients whose underlying pathology is not conducive to cardiopulmonary bypass. Inform clinical perfusion manager of new changes to protocol. e)Convey complex information to a broad range of audiences to promote an understanding of a unique speciality. f)Communicate clearly with student clinical perfusionists to ensure a full understanding of each procedure and task and its relevant importance. g)Communicate and negotiate essential information between senior medical staff and student clinical perfusionists during stressful situations. h)Remain composed during emergency and high-pressure situations, whilst being able to communicate effectively and clearly to colleagues in the multi-disciplinary team. i)To maintain close liaison within the multidisciplinary team and to foster good working relationships. j)Develop and maintain relationships and effective communication mechanisms with Trust staff, external organisations, and their representatives. k)Demonstrate good negotiation skills in the management of conflict across a range of clinical situations. l)Anticipate areas of potential communication breakdown and conflict and suggest suitable actions and solutions. m)Assist in the management of complaints ensuring confidentiality and deal with them sensitively and effectively and, where appropriate, ensure conflict does not arise. n)Interact with patients and relatives when they are on mechanical assist devices, often when patient prognosis is poor. o)Employ counselling skills with other members of staff after extremely stressful, highly emotional, or traumatic events. 6.Resource Management Financial a)Authorised signatory for financial payments and the ordering of consumable items, managing a devolved budget ensuring efficient and effective use of resources. b)Responsible for care of all the perfusion equipment, maintaining safe working order prior to use and fault reporting. c)Responsible for maintaining departmental stock levels and expiration dates when required. d)Order essential and non-essential perfusion equipment and disposables to ensure continuity of service. e)Evaluate and audit all allied scientific equipment regularly as required. f)To assist in the application of new perfusion equipment in conjunction with emerging technologies. g)Assist in the tendering and procurement of consumables and be fully conversant in standing order procedures, being aware of, and adhering to the financial constraints of the Trust. h)To assist in the economical and effective use and management of resources. i)Take a lead role in the clinical evaluation and critical review of new devices/ equipment. j)To assist the Perfusion Manager in organisation and implementation of service contracts. Human Resources 1.Monitor and evaluate the delivery of service within the team and report to clinical perfusion manager. 2.To ensure that the perfusion manager is present in the absence of the deputy perfusion manager. 3.Oversee the co-ordination of student training, giving support and assistance where required. 4.Facilitate and organise adequate and appropriate supervision and mentoring for students and colleagues. 5.Advise clinical perfusion manager on issues of service delivery, identifying potential shortfalls in clinical activity and intense pressure on staff and resources. 6.Help ensure staff flexibility to the demands of the environment, including unpredictable workload, emergency procedures, deadlines and multi-area working. 7.To produce and implement departmental rotas, maintaining a full clinical perfusion service to the trust in accordance with departmental protocol. 8.To assist the clinical perfusion manager in the recruitment and retention of staff and maintain a workforce development plan. 9.To be responsible for the appropriate delegation of duties to junior colleagues based on determined competency in the absence of the clinical perfusion manager. 10.To have Line management responsibilities for the team and, in the absence of the Perfusion Manager, for the whole department. 11.To undergo annual appraisals and use these to identify areas of personal and professional development. 7. Health and Safety a)Demonstrate highly developed auditory, visual and perceptive skills in dealing with a mass of disparate information. This will be on a second-to-second basis during the delivery of routine and highly complex perfusion techniques. b)Have due regard for the personal safety of themselves, and others, with respect to moving and handling regulations. c)Disassemble and remove contaminated clinical waste from theatre areas safely and ensure all equipment is disinfected. d)Responsible for the movement of heavy equipment between clinical areas (some greater than 250kg), including transfer of the heart lung machines to critical care, catheter lab and wards in emergency situations. e)Transfer of patients on specialist devices between wards/theatres and clinical areas. f)Transfer of disposables items from delivery areas to stock room, and subsequently to theatre, that are often heavy and unwieldy. g)Create, maintain and take responsibility for a healthy and safe environment within the working setting. h)Maintain intense levels of concentration in all aspects of patient management for protracted periods of time, often greater than 5 hours, whilst manipulating vital patient parameters during cardiopulmonary bypass to reduce the risk of patient morbidity and mortality. i)To maintain the dignity, and treat sensitively, patients in emergency situations, and in the event of a patient death during a procedure. j)To assist in the implementation of appropriate strategies for dealing with death during procedures. k)To employ a flexible approach to the demands of the environment these include an unpredictable workload, emergency procedures and deadlines. l)Employ counselling skills to allow feedback from staff after difficult or traumatic events i.e. termination of cardiopulmonary bypass when a poor patient prognosis is decided upon. m)Take effective precautions to prevent spread of infection to patients and colleagues within the workplace. n)Daily exposure to patient body fluids and infectious material, whilst managing the single most invasive device used in routine surgery.
