An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Physiotherapist with proven clinical and leadership skills to join the Physiotherapy Team at South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust. You will be joining a friendly and growing team that will allow you to explore your full potential.

If successful, you will be recruited to work across sites include Springfield University Hospital and Tolworth Hospital. You will encounter patients with a variety of physical health complaints from various specialities including but not limited to; musculoskeletal, neurology and older people. You will also have opportunities to work within the National Obsessive Compulsive Disorders Service alongside a well-established multidisciplinary team, learning disabilities, forensics and deaf services to name just some.

You will be supported by the Band 8a Head of Physiotherapy in yearly appraisals, monthly supervisions, dedicated CPD time and the option to attend Inservice training sessions with our musculoskeletal colleagues at St Georges Hospital. You will be involved in the organising of in-service training and supervision of junior members of staff as well as carrying a clinical caseload. You will also contribute to the development of the future NHS workforce by hosting physiotherapy student placements from a variety of Higher Education Institutions. You will be actively supported in your professional and clinical development.

The successful candidate will support the Head of Physiotherapy providing professional leadership for physiotherapy within the Trust.

You will undertake advanced, holistic physiotherapy assessments and formulate comprehensive treatment plans for service users with complex mental health and physical health problems across several specialities and settings. You will need to be confident in your ability to complete musculoskeletal and neurological assessments while clinically reasoning your decisions.

In addition to carrying a clinical caseload, you will also take on a leadership role within the team. You will assist with organising and delivering in-service training sessions, supervision and service development projects with the support of the Head of Physiotherapy. The successful candidate will be able to Lead by example, setting and maintaining a high standard of clinical practice and professionalism.

It is essential that the successful candidate have a high level of physiotherapy experience and knowledge gained through rotations at band 5 and 6 level in a variety of physiotherapy specialities. You will work in a setting where the demand can fluctuate and so will need to be highly organised and self-motivated to manage during these times. A high level of resilience will be required to handle some of the social and emotional components the role can entail. You will be supported during these times by the Head of Physiotherapy and the Wider Trust.

About our locations:

Springfield University Hospital, Tooting

Our largest, 19-ward site is in Springfield Village, created following our £150m investment into two new world class mental health facilities. A 32-acre public park, shops and cafes are coming soon. Close to shops, cafes and Tooting Bec on the Northern Line plus Earlsfield and Tooting rail stations and bus routes.

Clinical
• To undertake advanced, holistic physiotherapy assessments and formulate comprehensive treatment plans for service users with complex mental health and physical health problems.
• Be aware of individual service user history, background & culture, and to take this into account in order to formulate and implement treatment plans collaboratively with the service user.
• Lead by example, setting and maintaining a high standard of clinical practice.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of Physiotherapy interventions and quality of clinical decision making in conjunction with service users/carers and other professionals.
• Identify any significant clinical risk factors in line with local policies, with support from senior managers.
• Be responsible for equipment used, ensuring that all departmental policies are adhered to, ensuring safe use by other staff and service users.
• Act as a resource for any individual, professional body or outside agency that may seek specialist clinical knowledge or information about Physiotherapy in Mental Health.
• Adhere to any clinical standards and guidelines produced by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy or other relevant Special Interest Groups (e.g. CPMH / AGILE).
• Plan and prioritise the caseload of more junior staff and students where necessary.

Communication
• To demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills in a wide range of situations to enable and encourage service users to access physiotherapy interventions, especially when there are barriers to engagement requiring an empathetic, reassuring and sometimes persuasive approach.
• Work as a member of the inter-professional team, attending meetings and contributing to decisions regarding the care and treatment of service users; being actively involved in wards rounds, care plan reviews, and discharge planning meetings as required.
• Communicate effectively and sensitively with carers.
• Liaise promptly and appropriately with outside agencies (e.g. liaison psychiatry, social services, acute sector colleagues) as required.

Documentation
• To maintain accurate, comprehensive and timely treatment records in line with CSP standards of practice and Trust policies, and to supervise junior and student physiotherapists’ record keeping to the same standards.
• Ensure own & supervisees electronic documentation and activity data are maintained in accordance with Professional (CSP) and Trust documentation standards.
• Actively engage in the Trust’s incident reporting system.

Professional Ethics
• To determine each service-user’s understanding of the proposed intervention to ensure valid consent is gained, and to understand and work within a legal framework with those who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.
• Adhere to the CSP code of conduct, HCPC requirements for registration, the Trust’s Code of Conduct and all other relevant policies and procedures related to professional behaviour.
• Adhere to NICE guidelines or SIG recommendations for good practice where available.
• Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviours at all times.

• Supervise physiotherapy students, including evaluation of competency and placement performance.
• Participate in the induction, training and clinical education of other students and Trust staff as required.

• Be responsible for maintaining all mandatory Trust training up to date.
• Delegate and execute general administrative and co-ordination tasks as required for the smooth running of the service.

Service development and delivery
• To co-chair / lead Physiotherapy team meetings.
• Co-lead on the development of local standards, guidelines and protocols.
• Take an active role in audit and physiotherapy service evaluation.
• Work with clinical improvement groups on the development of care pathways relevant to physiotherapy, and national service delivery frameworks. e.g. Falls prevention strategy
• To contribute to relevant professional and service development meetings and represent the physiotherapy service at wider forums as required.
• Actively encourage user involvement in service development.
• Contribute to the Trust wide quality/governance agenda for inpatient areas e.g. KIP, CQUIN (falls reduction)
• Demonstrate an ability to manage ambiguity & complexity in order to achieve service development.
• Demonstrate the ability to gather information from a wide range of resources to inform service development, e.g. actively engaging with iCSP managers network and iCSP clinical interest networks.
• Keep up to date with clinical developments and suggest the introduction of new practice, as appropriate, in discussion with co-team leader.

Professional development
• To undertake learning activities identified at PADR, including acquiring leadership skills necessary for the competent fulfilment of the shared team leadership role.
• Organise & participate in regular in-service training for self & others.
• Be responsible for maintaining your own competency to practise through CPD activities identified during professional supervision and at annual appraisal.
• Maintain a portfolio, which reflects competencies for the post and records personal development in line with the Health and Care Profession Council guidelines.

Clinical governance, quality, standards
• To comply with all Trust policies related to clinical governance.
• Ensure adherence to all Health & Safety policies, helping physiotherapy staff to assess & manage risk, and taking responsibility for monitoring safety of working practice.
• Continually strive to improve the quality of own & others work.
• Ensure quality systems are in place to evaluate / monitor others & take action if there are persistent quality problems.
• Ensure that medical devices are managed according to Trust policy.
• To comply with all Trust policies.
