Why Derwentside College?

Derwentside College is one of the top performing colleges in the region for its employer and student satisfaction. We are an ambitious organisation and as a large provider of apprenticeships we are leading the way in delivering a range of outstanding services to learners and employers.

The Opportunity

We are seeking to recruit an outstanding Lecturer in Foundation Learning (SEND Specialist) to join our inclusive and ambitious team at Derwentside College.

This is more than a teaching role. It is an opportunity to make a genuine difference to learners by delivering an aspirational, carefully structured curriculum that builds confidence, independence and meaningful pathways into adulthood, employment and further learning.

You will play a vital role in enabling learners to know more, remember more and do more, supporting their personal development alongside academic and vocational progress, and helping them to thrive in a safe, respectful and nurturing learning environment.

What you will do?

As a Lecturer in Foundation Learning, you will plan and deliver high-quality, adaptive teaching that responds to individual learner needs and promotes sustained progress over time. You will:

Deliver ambitious, inclusive programmes for learners with SEND, aligning teaching to EHCP outcomes, IEPs and personalised plans. Use structured, multi-sensory and accessible approaches to remove barriers, promote independence, and ensure learners make sustained progress over time.

Create a positive, supportive learning environment that builds resilience, self-belief and high expectations for behaviour and achievement. Support learners’ personal development, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood while maintaining strong levels of engagement, attendance and retention.

Work collaboratively to secure successful outcomes and progression, assessing learner progress accurately and providing meaningful feedback linked to long-term goals. Contribute to curriculum planning and joined-up support with Learning Support Assistants, specialist teams and external partners.
